Mindfulness (A story)
Hey guys I just wanted to share an experience today where mindfulness helped me :).
So just some quick background information. I box four nights and week and Tuesday and Thursday I spare (practice fight).
So this evening I was at boxing as usual and I was sparing. I was practicing moving around the ring and keeping myself from being hit. I was up against someone much taller than myself and he had a massive reach on me so he could hit me quite easily. I kept getting hit and wasn't really doing what I was meant to be doing (I was trying to but failing), so the assistant coach (I guess that's what you could call him) called from the side of the ring, "Think about what you're doing!". So I did. I took a few deeper breathes, stood still for a second and starting to really think about what I was thinking and what I need to do. I became mindful of what I was doing. So anyway, I start to block correctly, move in and out, side to side correctly and started to land some decent punches on my sparing partner. After I got out of the ring the coach said to me "Now that was boxing, well done! You did well".
So that is just a story of how mindfulness helped me. It helped me take a few moments and think about what I was doing in boxing, and after I did, I did quite well. For anyone out there who is struggling to get through something, maybe just take a few deeper breathes, relax and start to think about what you're thinking and what you need to do to be successful!
P.S. It put a smile on my face because I was being mindful and I was starting to learn what I need to in the ring to get better :D.

Like, what do you write in the diary? How often? What effect does it have on you?
Hi Tempus
i dont write a diary everyday only when im feeling stressed, especially around school/uni times. I write down everything that could be making me up set cause sometimes we can get in to odd moods and we dont know why. you dont have to use the format " dear Diary" sometimes writting a list can be good
Ah yeah :). I do a similar thing when things get really over board. I sometimes write a blogpost in my blog (no one reads it but my bestfriend) about everything that's bothering me. I used to write a lot about my depression and how I was feeling, that really helped vent it somewhere.
Just a quick update.
Again tonight I had sparing at boxing and I used the same technique for mindfulness and it worked! Again! My trainer said to me that was some of the best movement he has seen from me and I was really relaxed and composed in the ring!
It worked again! :D.
Also I used mindfulness in my 3 hour, 3 essay, English exam. It kept me from feeling over whelmed and I got through each essay on time and I felt proud of each one! 😄
It also made my methods exam fun because I wasn't getting stressed out and I was just solving problems :D.
Great thread Tempus 😄
I've got two little boys so I find it easy to get flustered and frustrated when they're fighting/crying/having a tantrum/demanding things/trying to dress them get them out the door... so at a lot of points throughout the day! So in these moments I try to not get frustrated about what I'm trying to do and just be in the moment and deal with it.
Kids are naturally so mindful - when they can't find their batman costume it really is every bit as catastrophic as they are acting, haha! So anyway it's been a helpful coping tactic for me and definitely helps me be a slightly improved parent!
While I'm at it - here's a little video that I love called One Moment Meditation that I thought people in this thread might enjoy:
Great video :D.
I remember learning things very similar to that video from smiling mind. Quite a good site.

Mine is a similar sport-related activity... I've recently started outdoor rockclimbing with a few friends, and I'm absolutely loving it - but I'm finding that I'm getting a bit scared (terrified) of the heights. It's not even necessarily the heights... I'm totally fine with standing on something super high, provided there is a solid base beneath me. I'm even fine with rockclimbing/high ropes at work, because I know and trust the equipment. But climbing outdoors and relying on centimetre (if that) wide crevices and bumps in rocks to hold me is a bit scary.
Anyway - we were climbing last Sunday and I'd been on the rocks for about five minutes trying to work out where I was going to move to next, and was starting to psych myself out thinking that there was nowhere for me to grasp from where I was (despite my friends having done the same climb before me, and proving that it definitely was possible to make it to the top). I turned around to yell down to a friend that I couldn't move from there and was coming back down, and looking down at him I freaked a bit... thankfully he knows me very well and could tell my head was going a million miles an hour, so he talked me through taking some deep breaths then using my hands to feel around me for the next handhold. By taking that minute or so to centre myself, calm my thoughts, and use my senses to find the next grip, I kept going and got to the top 🙂

One of the better times I used mindfulness was in my physics midterm a few weeks ago. With MCQ I have a bad habit of changing them...well instead I sat still and really considered what I was doing and listening to the intentions of my heart and gut instinct. The average was 62% I got 83%...it really helped me...and I hope with my physics final on Monday I can try to do the same thing with the ones I'm not so sure about.
Gail, it's amazing that you were able to pull through that, find your center and continue climbing :D.
Wow, 90 minutes of yoga, nice! :D.
So it does work with school! :D. That is an amazing mark Sagira! Very well done mate! :D. Now I know i have to try it with my year 11 exams coming up!
These are really great stories! Well done guys 🙂
I can't think of one at the moment...but I think you lot have done enough of a great job that it probably isn't needed!
I really need to take more time in each day to be more mindful.
Does anyone else have any stories like this? I'm sure everyone would love to read them!
I need to more mindful as well on a day to day basis, it might help with these exams coming up! 🙂
But yes, I'd love to read other peoples stories!
