Re: [CHAT] Valentine's, Schmalentine's

What do you think are some positive and negative aspects of Valentines day?

Positives
- oppurtunity to remind you or your significant other to how much you love and appreciate them

Negatives
- Can be upsetting for those with nobody
- Commercialised
- Can be competitive which is sad cause spending lots of money on someone doesnt neccesrily mean you love them

//caught in fire, watch me burn gonna live my life, mark these words cause I'm home//

@Jia YES YES YES! I love what you said about society making it seem as though we are incomplete without partners when we are all extremely capable of leading fulfilling and happy lives single.

Re: [CHAT] Valentine's, Schmalentine's

I know what you mean @N1ghtW1ng, I went to a girls school so we would give flowers to each other like friendship ones which was nice but its the same thing again - do you need to send someone a flower to prove your friendship? even being in a relationship i find myself feeling bad if i see someone at work get a big bunch of flowers or something. But that isnt a representation of my relationship!

Also I think the discussion about the highlighting of gender roles on V-day is interesting because I know in Eastern countries (China, South Korea, Japan) they have something called White Day which is on March 14th where the girl is the one giving gifts to guys

Oh, thanks @Jia and @DruidChild! Smiley Happy I was thinking it had something to do with companies (Association Smiley Tongue)

@Stealth_ninja I feel like, when you have it in a school or work environment and encourage people to send things to their crush or friends or whatever, you can end up excluding those people who don't get anything and leave them feeling isolated because it could lead them to think that no one loves or cares about them, and in a school environment, loneliness isn't fun Smiley Sad
I mean, it's not unintentional, the exclusion but it still happens and it's not very nice.

@Jia That's really interesting, I didn't know about that custom.

@N1ghtW1ng Yeah exclusion doesn't necessarily have to be on purpose, but it's still painful when other people feel loved and cared for and you don't.

@N1ghtW1ng @Stealth_ninja Yeah those kind of school programs can really feel excluding if you're not participating in them but I guess they have good intentions in that it's something that you can be silly about with your friends if you're not in a relationship
