Re: ATSI Gathering Place

Also i thought i would copy out the questions for people just in case they want to copy them into a reply.

Which tribe do you, your ancestors and family belong to?

What is your absolute favourite thing to do when you have spare time?

What makes you most proud about being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander?

This is epic! Smiley Very Happy

One thing I'd like to clarify though: I've read that the acronym 'ATSI' is considered offensive by some Indigenous groups. I'm not entirely sure why though? Just that I know at uni we were taught not to use it when writing assignments or in patient notes out on placement. I'd be keen to learn more about if anyone can explain it to me Smiley Happy

Hmm @lokifish I, myself have never had an issue with it and its how groups I am a part of refer as themselves, happy for anybody to explain a bit more though.

Re: ATSI Gathering Place

@j95 Yeah I've seen some groups use it while others tend to avoid it, so I'm never sure whether to use it myself. I guess it's an issue that arises when society just assumes that Indigenous people are a homogenous group. Because from what I understand (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) prior to European settlement each tribe was essentially its own nation, with it's own culture/language, values and laws. So there's bound to be differences in how groups perceive things.

Anyway I don't want to hijack this thread Smiley Tongue I just thought I'd ask as I'm always curious about these things Smiley Happy

Re: ATSI Gathering Place

Yeah, in terms of gathering together despite being part of different tribes I don't see it as issue @lokifish I can change it if some people don't like it
