if you were concerned something was up but they don't feel like talking about it with you, you can always casually drop lines about other services where they can remain anonymous like the Kids Help Line, then at least they know there's options. I would also tell them that you're there for them and will talk to them when they are ready to talk. Sometimes it just takes time.

Most of the time it is a good idea to give them space and allow them to seek help when they are ready, however if you think they are at risk or in serious danger than ringing emergency services is totally okay.

Also remember sometimes people need someone to help them with distress tolerance, coping strategies and distraction techniques. So you might be helping just by the simple act of offering to hang out and do fun stuff, even if they might never be ready to talk about it with someone they know and might only reach out privately for example .
