Coping with the Loss of a Celebrity

Despite not knowing them personally, celebrities can become a big part of our daily lives. We see them on our favourite TV shows, we listen to their songs and podcasts, and we follow them on social media - they make their way into our homes, hearts and minds without us even realising. As such, when a celebrity we know and love passes away, it can be a difficult experience to process and we may wind up feeling a sense of grief and loss for this person, even if we've never met them.

If you're struggling with feelings of grief and loss after the passing of a celebrity that was important to you, we want to remind you that it is absolutely okay to feel upset, confused, and to grieve. Be sure to reach out to your friends, family or support systems if you'd like to talk about what you're feeling and know that it's completely reasonable to take some time away from the news and social media if you need a break from hearing upsetting stories.

If you want some extra guidance on coping with the loss of a celebrity, we'd encourage you to check out our article on managing grief when someone famous dies.

Thank you for sharing this. It’s so true—celebrities can have a profound impact on our lives, even if we don’t know them personally. When someone we admire passes away, it’s indeed a painful loss that can really shake us up.

I appreciate the reminder that it’s okay to feel upset and to take time to process those feelings. Talking to friends or stepping back from social media can make a big difference.

I’d love to hear how others cope with this kind of loss as well. Have any of you found specific ways to honor or remember a celebrity who meant a lot to you?

Thank you for sharing this! Many people seem to look down on feelings we may have for celebrities because essentially it's a parasocial relationship. Nevertheless, those feelings are genuine and should be taken seriously! The resource you shared are super helpful too!

Thank you for posting this @Portia_RO ! You don't have to know someone personally to have love for them and I think feeling sad when someone important to you passes away - even if they are a stranger - is a completely valid feeling 🤍

Welcome back!
