Getting Ready to Vote

The time to vote on the referendum is fast approaching! Whether you’re heading to the polls or submitting your postal vote, there have been a lot of emotions leading up to the 14th of October. There’s a range of information and opinions out there to process and understand, and it’s important to look after ourselves in the middle of it.

What’s also important is knowing that you have enrolled to vote if you are over 18. The time you must enrol to vote or change your details before is 8pm, Monday 18th September. Head to the Australian Electoral Commission website to enrol if you haven’t already! If you have already voted in a federal election you do not need to enrol again. And if you’re curious about the process and dates for voting, check out the infographic below.

Having conversations about politics with friends or family that have different views can be difficult at this time. It might end up with us feeling frustrated, upset or unheard. There’s also potential to feel disappointed or worried about the future when the results come out. We’ve put together a guide to discussing politics with friends and family which gives strategies on how to cope with a range of situations and putting your wellbeing first.

Our forums are a place where you can discuss your emotions leading up to the referendum, but we remind you to stay respectful towards others and the wider community 🙂 We have the Yarn Up space for First Nations young people to seek support, and you can find a list of community support options as well.
