INFOBUS October 4th 2018: Getting to know the ReachOut Online Community Team with Amirah
This month's Infobus continues with the theme of "get to know the ReachOut team" as we welcome our guest @Amirah-RO, our Online Community Manager at ReachOut! We are very excited to introduce our incredible manager and give you the opportunity to learn more about the team behind the scenes!
Next week, on Thursday the 4th of October from 7pm-9pm join us to get to know the ReachOut team with Amirah and talk all things forums, ReachOut, mental health, social work and life!
Amirah is an award-winning social worker and youth advocate with over ten years’ experience supporting ‘at-risk’ youth in Australia and abroad. She is also the Founder and Director of Taboo Talk, ‘A brave space for difficult conversations’. Amirah is a firm believer in self-expression and promotes the use of arts and culture as a means of empowerment. An example of this is her most recent collaboration with Bankstown Youth Development Service (BYDS) and Zeal Theatres in producing ‘To Be Honest’, a play showcasing the painstakingly honest and often untold stories of young people’s journeys overcoming homelessness, drug abuse, racism, family breakdown, and mental health issues.
Amirah spent most of 2017 travelling the world where she engaged with communities right around the globe, including Indonesia, Capetown, Tanzania, Dubai, Egypt, London and Germany. Having worked with thousands of young people across the world, and across sectors, Amirah feels confident in her ability to understand the diverse and complex needs of young people and how to best work with individuals to help realise their true potential. Amirah joined ReachOut Australia 8 months ago as Online Community Manager.
We are very excited to welcome Amirah as our guest! Do you have a question you would like to ask? Now is your chance to ask all the questions you have been wanting to ask and get to know Amirah better!
You can submit your questions for Amirah here and join the discussion Thursday night at 7pm We look forward to seeing you there!
If you would like to get a notification 30 mins before we start the infobus, high five this post!
That is a really great question @Zeldasmile! Definitely I'd love to get @Amirah-RO's take on.
You have asked some really amazing questions tonight and we are so grateful you have jumped into the conversation If you have any more questions, keep them coming
That's so cool @litgym! What is this casual volunteer work you speak of?!
@Amirah-RO my reactions reading your answers...
With all that experience and passion we're super lucky to have you around! ❤️
You've touched on encouraging others, but for those wanting to head into the mental health field, what are 3 tips to succeed in the field?
WOuld you be able to expand more on checking your intentions? I'm keen to learn more about what you mean 🙂
Thanks @Bee 😄
My pleasure 🙂 People join this industry for all sorts out reasons. Some, because they want to make a positive difference in someone's life. While it's noble, it can also set you up to fail. When you rely too heavily of the outcome of your effort, for example, someone working through an addiction, sometimes it can take years for that behaviour to shift. It's important to not tie "success" to the outcome you're hoping that person will achieve. And rather see them for where they are and journey with them. So I feel it's an important question for every person in the field to ask themselves, otherwise job dissatisfaction and burnout may start to present.
Absolutely love that advice @Amirah-RO and so important in maintaining your wellbeing when supporting others!
@Amirah-ROI haven't really been around much recently or gotten to know you but you seem very passionate about what you do which is great and if I haven't said it before, it's nice having you on here as well as @Jess1-RO :D!
I know this isn't MH related but what footy team do you go for?
@FootyFan26 I know, I would love to spend more time in the forums! Thank you for your sweet words, it's SO nice chatting with everyone tonight and getting to know you all better 🙂
I'm sorry...... I don't follow footy........ *runs away*!

Hey thanks @litgym! Do I just sign up?
I got to go now but this has been a fantastic chat!
Good night or morning or whatever to you all!!
@gina-RO and I both love working with you @Amirah-RO and the support you offer the people accessing RO services!

Where's your happy place?
What's your favourite thing to do on weekends?
What goals do you have for the next 5 years?
