Jan 26th - a healthy discussion.
Hello all! This is a very meaningful day for a lot of people and there's already been a bit of discussion over January 26th throughout the day. I am starting this thread so our community can express their views on Australia Day / The date of Australia Day celebrations / What it means to celebrate living in this country.
What makes you happy / frustrates you about the occassion?
Let's keep it loving and respectful - but also share your viewpoint, remember we don't all have to agree 🙂
I can get the ball rolling -
I personally think it's good to have the public holiday, and hang out with mates! However I don't feel comfortable (personally) celebrating Australia on a day that coincides with the ball rolling on moving native Australians off their land - this is purely my viewpoint.
when I was at school I read a book called "growing up Asian in Australia".
It's not just Indigenous Australian's hurt in all this. If the date needs to be changed then it needs to accomodate "everyone", not just those who hate today. And by the way, I don't even celebrate the day, I just wish people could use nicer words when they make their protests (I think I've been reading too much of the book; The Art of Happiness.......... sorry I'll shut up on my minority thoughts)
Omg @loves netball I'm pretty sure my dad wrote some of that book (is it an edited book?)
What day do you think would be most inclusive of everybody?
And yeah I'm sorry I swore, that was innapropriate of me.
yeah it's full of many different stories from heaps of people and their experiences growing up Asian in Australia @DruidChild
edit- swear as much as you like, just not at someone - no I meant when I see all the protests on tv news etc
Yeah he wrote one of those stories @loves netball 🙂
Thinking out loud here...what about if we combined Harmony day and Australia Day? We could have it on March 21st and celebrate EVERYONE in Australia.
Yeah @Bree-RO he's a writer, that's why we're so poor lol
Did I swear at someone?? I'm sorry 😞 Didn't mean to.
Haha it's less cool when you have to live with him but thanks @Bree-RO 🙂
I don't know if I still have the book @DruidChild
Growing up Asian in Australia - edited by Alice Pung
oh god no you didn't do anything wrong @DruidChild.
I'm digging myself into a massive hole
I think so...unless I'm wrong though, don't quote me on anything related to my father 🙂
Nah it's not you I'm just being paranoid and conflict avoidant @loves netball
