Letting the negative self talk go

Yesterday I wrote a post saying how I struggle with saying a lot of negative things to myself and I got a lot of helpful suggestions.

Sometimes challenging my inner bully can be almost impossible, especially in the moment when i'm angry or upset at myself. But there is alternative, recognising that the inner bully is there and giving myself space to recognise it, accept and let it pass.

Have a look at this link where @Kaz-RO explains a bit more of the process

@Ben-RO suggested that I make a thread so that a few us can work on this together, I know that I find doing things with other people a lot easier.

Hopefully some of you want to work on this too and we'll use this thread to talk about how we're all going with it and post some updates!

Annd I'm done. Not gonna lie, I was REALLY distracted in that one. It wasn't until i got up to the bit where you count breaths that i started to be able to focus on my breathing for any stretch of time at all without wandering off to think of all the things. Even then i often got up to 5 or 6 counts before i wandered off again. It helped me focus and chill out a little, but I'd probably need to do it again to to feel like i usually do after a mindfulness session.

How'd everyone else go?

I was really seriously flustered before we started (as you probably figured by my response) and became very distracted in that whole thing

@j95 do you think it'd help you to do a different one now, or do you need to do something else to get rid of the flustered feeling?

Yeah I probably will try some over the weekend. Just have to remember not to do it right before going to sleep, or I'll fall asleep 2 mins in 😛

Hmm, it definitely takes some practice, and it seems to me like it can be pretty tough to get settled when we're feeling very unsettled. I think it's cool that it still helps a bit. Are you going to have a go at doing it over the weekend?

I started out alright. My neighbour was talking and bbqing some steak which smells amazing but set off his smoke alarm and he was obviously on the phone cause was like "gotta go, I set off the smoke alarm"... So that was very distracting but was still ok and I was getting pretty relaxed.

But part way through the breath counting thing I started getting a weird feeling of not being able to feel my hands and then started freaking out because I could feel them but not feel them and fffffffpppppnope. That eased up after awhile but I think I'm going to keep moving around for a bit so it doesn't happen again.

I sometimes actually try to do this anyway with songs. Couldn't really decide on a favourite so just picked the last one I'd played which was Alesso - Heroes. I didn't really find 5 new things although I noticed a snare hit and shaker? (I think?) in the 2nd verse that I hadn't paid attention to before, kind of paid more attention to how the middle layers drop out then build up towards the chorus, paid more attention to the mid-range percussion in general.
