Tomorrow, 26th January, Invasion day and a day of mourning for many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. As a Aboriginal woman myself, trying to find my feet and place within a split world, I can recognise the lack of knowledge and awareness that stands across the date of the 26th January. This is why we are bringing to you Yabun, completely accessible digitally tomorrow!
Yabun is the largest one day celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, a day of connection as a celebration of our survival. Being a part of this celebration is important to so many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, but it reaches way beyond that, inviting all Australians to gather together and proudly hold the name of our ancestors and their fight to remain in our country.
For the last three years, Reachout has held a place in the stalls at Yabun, connecting with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across Australia, learning about and celebrating culture, and getting the word out about RO. With tomorrow's celebration going completely virtual, it gives you the opportunity to tune in from wherever you may be spending your day!
Tomorrow, they'll be live streaming performances, talks and corroboree on yabun.org.au and across their social media from 11am-5pm
Being a part of this incredible day and celebration does not require you to have enormous amounts of knowledge or connection within your Aboriginal communities, but instead it provides you the opportunity to dive into the world, celebration, dance, music, culture, and history of proud Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples!
