Let's Chat: Valentine's Day

 GIF by Jasmine Masters

Tomorrow is Valentine's day and for tonnes of people it can be more bitter than sweet. It sucks when you find yourself feeling lonely or comparing your relationship status to the people around you. I wanted to make a little post just pointing out the different ways that tomorrow can be celebrated, if you feel like you're missing out.

  • Romance yourself! I know that might sound a little silly but hear me out. Taking yourself out for your fave dinner, a massage, setting time aside for your hobbies or all three is self care. Although you don’t need an excuse to self-care a day like Valentine's Day can serve as a good reminder.
  • Spend time with a close friend or loved one. Friendships are so worth celebrating and we don’t really get a prompt to spoil our best mates. So maybe you can hang out, talk through your feelings about Valentine’s day or do something special together Smiley Happy

Those are my tips and things that I’ve actually done in the past.

Does anyone else have some ideas?

@Bre-RO I completely understand what you mean by doing self care or just treating a friend/loved one. I'm a single pringle after 2 breakups, but I'm happy with that.

Taking care of yourself is the best thing you can do. Also, just feeling okay with your current status, whether it be being single like me, or in a relationship.

I honestly don't know how to explain it, but I'm okay with my status and relationship/friendship progress. Hanging out with friends is definitely a good one to do, and has worked for me in the past as well.

I think that is something a lot of people struggle to embrace, so thank you for sharing that. Feeling okay with where you're at is so important Heart

Fantastic thread @Bre-RO! Valentine's Day is the perfect day to refocus on self care and self love, as well as generally appreciate the people around us (friends, family). I love this gif that puts self love at the top!

Just going to add a couple of my ideas!

  • Booking in some me-time: Sometimes life gets so chaotic that I forget to make sure I have time to spend on myself. Valentine's Day is the perfect time to do something nice for myself and focus on my wellbeing
  • Random acts of kindness: Making someone smile is one of the best gifts you can give those around you today, and the added benefit is that it can make you feel good too!
  • One year I bought hundreds of love heart stickers, and gave them to everyone I came across- it brought a lot of smiles and laughter to the day

@Bre-RO

I was actually wondering if anything like this was going to pop up here, it's great that you like, read my mind here!

Celebrating non-romantic is so important too- like Galentine's with ya gal pals are close friends who are like partners and family anyway. Make memories and hold them close like you would take the time and intent to do to a romantic partner!

Yesss I love romancing yourself- the greatest relationship is that which you have with yourself, after all! May I do a shameless (but timely and relevant) plug of my treat yo'self Weekly Wellbeing thread for ideas and inspiration!

These are some great ideas!

I've been spending today at home recovering from surgery, but later on, I might watch a romantic movie on Netflix. Smiley Happy
On past Valentines' Days, I've written cards to family and friends expressing what I love about them. I find that special occasions are also a great time to volunteer and give back to the community.

Re: Let's Chat: Valentine's Day

I love this thread so much , thanks @Bre-RO !

I've always been a bit of a Valentine's day Grinch, but this year I had one of the loveliest days - I can't use the actual pictures for privacy reasons, but I spent a couple of hours volunteering at the local intergenerational playgroup that I help to run. If you haven't heard of the concept, it's basically holding a normal playgroup ( so kids and their parents/carers aged from 0-5) with toys, craft, singing etc - but held at a nursing home, with the residents.

We made valentine's day cards with the residents and had lots of giggles - people in nursing homes can often be quite socially isolated, and there's something so universal about playing with toddlers and little kids. The residents with dementia often absolutely light up, and it's a really lovely thing to do.

The images I've used here are from an ABC documentary about a similar program - old people's home for 4 year olds (https://iview.abc.net.au/show/old-people-s-home-for-4-year-olds)

So good to see programs like this gaining momentum and for me, it was the perfect thing to do on Valentine's day - celebrating human connection, kindness and fun Heart Heart

Re: Let's Chat: Valentine's Day

I always thought Valentine's Day was such a silly over-commercialised holiday but the idea to use it as a day to practice self-care or share the love by volunteering for others is so beautiful! Everyone on here is so inspirational Heart

I was given a little chocolate heart by my mum on Valentine's Day. She said it was given to her by someone and she wanted to pass it along to me. When I saw my friend later that day I gave it to her! A small example I guess showing that it's not just about receiving gifts but about sharing the love!

Re: Let's Chat: Valentine's Day

I've seen this doco- Australia needs to implement this everywhere, it's so good and cost-effective! Everyone benefits! You'd never think about it on a Valentine's Day thread, but now it actually makes perfect sense! And the end of the day, romantic love is only one (none the less awesome) kind of human connection!

Re: Let's Chat: Valentine's Day

@Tay100  I think you're spot on, it was actually just a coincidence that we happened to run a session on Valentine's Day, but when I saw this post I realised that it was actually one of my favourite ever Valentine's Days! For me, V-Day doesn't have to be about romantic love, but I really liked being able to take the time to appreciate human connection, the power of community, and also made my family some cards at the session as a bonus!
