Re: Help for food and eating issues

It is a weird word...

And also another thing I'll need to check out! Smiley Happy

Re: Help for food and eating issues

Does anyone else here struggle to work out if they've eaten too much or not eaten enough/ get mixed up between the two?

Re: Help for food and eating issues

Hey @Sammyye

I just wanted to stop by on this thread because I can see there's been some conversation about eating disorders here. Firstly, I want to say thank you so much for caring about people with eating disorders. It's obvious that you wanted to help by sharing what you did Heart Even though your intentions were good, I did need to remove the post and the comments that followed it as the conversation was stepping outside of the community guidelines.

Eating disorders are one of the topics that we have to be mindful of when discussing with the community. In our guidelines we say that it's best to steer clear from descriptions of eating disorders and methods. The reason for this is because eating disorders are varying and complex. Because of this recovery from an eating disorder is not a one size fits all approach. We want to be careful that we aren't oversimplifying what is a complicated experience for many people here on the forums Heart We are planning on going into more detail about this in a separate post so we can make sure there's no confusion. In the meantime for anyone who is wondering The Butterfly Foundation are the experts in this area and would be the best people to get some support from if you're struggling.

@Tiny_leaf  you made some really insightful comments on this topic and thank you for tagging us so we could make sure the community is safe. We really appreciate how you look out for the community.

Re: Help for food and eating issues

Um, so, it's new year time.

And a lot of people and tv ads and everything are talking about losing weight after the holiday period and resolutions about dieting and eating "good" foods and weight loss and meal plans and stuff.

The problem is that these are really big triggers for me.

Like if I think about them too much, I get overwhelmed, so being reminded of this stuff so frequently is really damaging for me.

Has anyone here experienced anything like this, or have any suggestions on coping with it?

Because right now I'm full of anxiety just thinking about what I had for lunch today...

Re: Help for food and eating issues

Hi @Tiny_leaf,

Something I have also noticed, there is certainly a lot more focus on eating and other "heath" product advertisements floating around social media, particularly in relation to New Year's resolutions.

You have mentioned that these sorts of reminders are triggers for you, and that it has caused a lot of stress at the moment for you. How have you managed these triggers when they have come up before?

I would be interested to hear from the rest of our community about how to cope with these sorts of advertisements as well

Re: Help for food and eating issues

@Jess1-RO before I hadn't even recognized them as triggers, so I just got really stressed and changed my eating..

Which is probably not the best way to cope with triggers...

Re: Help for food and eating issues

Hi @Tiny_leaf,

That is a huge step identifying the ads as a trigger- it sounds like this is something you have given a lot of thought to and recently connected as leading to changes in your eating patterns the last couple of days.

I know we have spoken about coping strategies and distractions for other types of triggers before. Do you think there may be some coping strategies you use for other types of triggers that may help with this one too?

I am sure you have come across the butterfly foundation before- they may also be a good support should the stress increase around eating when you are feeling triggered by what is out there. Have you used any of their services before or visited their website? If you have, was there any helpful information there you think could help when you are feeling stressed?

Also just wanted to let you know I slightly edited the wording of your post so we can keep having this important conversation while keeping with the guidelines Heart I think this is a stressor a lot of people will be feeling with the push to make new year's resolutions

Re: Help for food and eating issues

@Jess1-RO I have no coping strategies for any type of triggers.

And yeah, I've contacted them but I just got the feeling that the person there just wanted to get rid of me and speak to someone with "real" issues. It was really upsetting and I don't really want to go back..

And thanks for editing that - I'll be a bit more careful in future.
