Questions looking for answers

Evening all.

So the weirdest thing happened today. A friend tapped me on the shoulder and i jumped. (Ok that might seem normal) but hear me out for a second i was... it was like i was back over a year ago to afraid to do anything. Too scared as to what was happening to me.

But it got me thinking maybe a bit to much. Human touch.... and how do we really really get used to it again.

Re: Questions looking for answers

@Eagle I think it is understandable that you jumped especially if you weren't expecting it or so engrossed in what you were doing.

As to getting used to human touch again, that is an interesting one, I'll tag some other users to see if they have any ideas

Re: Questions looking for answers

Hi @Eagle

as @Bee said jumping if you werent expecting it is pretty normal but i can see where your coming from. I guess its about people around people more. while walking or sitting with people theres generally some arm brushes etc. Sometimes going out of your comfort zone and giving a family member a hug or someone a hand shake can work as well.

Re: Questions looking for answers

@scared01@Bee.. I wasn’t expecting it but for that single moment in time it was hell. Before I realised who it was... then you know the   Awkward apologies  Happen. But did got me thinking. I use to be a hugging person but now a hand shake is some times all i can muster up...  i hate when people are behind me i just over think and think the worst.

Yeah you’re right @scared01

Re: Questions looking for answers

@Eagle that makes sense and I think it is understandable that you feel awkward touching other people
I wonder have you even spoken to a counsellor or psychologist about the past trauma?

Re: Questions looking for answers

do you have supports? @Eagle i think this topic would be handy for you to bring up with a psychologist as well so you are better able to process what happened and work through the emotions as well.
did you want to talk about what happened at all?

Re: Questions looking for answers

Hey there @Eagle,

As others have mentioned, jumping when someone taps you on the shoulder is a totally normal response. It can be really difficult to get used to human touch again, especially when something bad happened. I found when dealing with new or difficult situations such as touching, something I'm not comfortable with myself, trust is important to me. If I don't trust a person to respect my boundaries, then I don't feel like I can allow myself to touch them, because if they don't respect my choice to not be touched, then I don't feel safe and that's not fair to me or anyone.

Do you think you'd be comfortable talking to a counselor or another support about how you're feeling?
