good psychiatrists in Brisbane who work with medication and therapy

Hi guys I am a bit upset today after my psychiatrist that I have worked with for 5 years closed her books, so I need to look for a new one.  In 20 years of seeing shrinks she was the only good one I have found. I am interested in other peoples experience with doctors. I have experienced a lot of trauma in my life so I need psychotherapy or cognitive therapy as well as medication supervision. I live in Brisbane. ThanksCat Very Happy

Hey girlwiththecurl,

I'm sorry to hear your psychiatrist has closed her books - it's always hard to transition from a professional who has been helpful. While it can feel a bit hard, it might be helpful to think of it as a bit of 'a new chapter'… I changed psychiatrists last year after six years, and while it was quite upsetting at the time, I really feel that it's allowed me to keep moving forward in my recovery journey.

There's a few places you can look for professionals in your area - BeyondBlue have a find a practitioner search which is a really good way to find a doctor, and the Australian Psychologists Association have a find a psychologist search - you can search within your area and see what professionals specialise/are interested in particular areas. Word of mouth is always a good way to get recommendations too, so perhaps talking to your GP and asking whether they know of any professionals in the area who might be appropriate.

Good luck, let us know how you go!

hey girlwiththecurl,

It can be really hard having to start fresh with a new psychiatrist. Especially hard when you really like the one you are seeing. I think it's great that you are being so pro-active in trying to find a new one. I don't know Brisbane so I'm not able to offer any recommendations but I think the suggestions that have been made are good ones.

I'm wondering if your old Psych has a colleague she could refer you to. Was this something you discussed with her?
