Re: [CHAT] Social Networking Sites

4. Have you ever taken a break from social networking sites? How was it?

I have, yeah. It definitely feels a little weird the first time you do it, or if you've been really active on them for a couple days - you check your phone for phantom thumb notifications, and start turning around in circles every time you hear someone on the train get a message. You can feel a little empty from the sudden absence of constant contact - it's almost like a little mini-withdrawal.

But I think it helps to keep you grounded and separate from the online version of you, and re-establish some boundaries. Everyone likes getting likes, but there's a difference between liking likes, and expecting/needing them.

And it can be so, soooo easy to slip between the two. At first you might just be sharing your content (like a photo you took, a song you played, or just a funny meme) because you enjoyed it and figured your friends might too, get a tonne of likes and are like "Oh my god! Everyone loved it! That was amazing!". And then you share your next piece, and everyone loves it again. And then you share your next piece, and...well, you still get some likes, but not as many. Suddenly, you're thinking "Shit, that didn't get as many likes, did I do something bad? Did I get worse than the last two times? How do I get people to love my stuff again?". At which point, you've made the transition from just sharing to performing. And it's no longer just about you anymore. Which is fine, if you like performing or are planning on going into something like Youtubing, etc. But otherwise it's just a lot of stress that detracts from something that used to be just yours, that you could enjoy for it's own sake, rather than the audience's applause.

Re: [CHAT] Social Networking Sites

Q5. I think  not letting social media be your life would be a good point. Have other hobbies, interest tech free time and dont choose social media over hanging out with your friends.

Re: [CHAT] Social Networking Sites

Probably a good time to wrap things up - I'm barely pulling through the food coma, hahaha

5.  If you could share one piece of advice about social networking, what would it be?

I'm gonna cheat and put two but here goes, hehehe Smiley Tongue

  1. Be careful of what you share. Always ask "What would my mother think?" before posting anything publicly, and exercising some general caution like not leaving your primary email address/bank details around where just anyone can view them. 99% of the time you'll probably be fine, but there's no point risking becoming the 1% of unfortunates if you don't have to.
  2. Social media is a tool for you. Use if it's useful and if you enjoy it, but try to keep some boundaries around what you do and don't share. If you find yourself worrying about how something will look on social media, or how people are going to react, then it might be time to step back and evaluate whether or not your profile really is that important to you. It might be, but it also might not. And it's always good to know which is which.

Night guys! Glad I could make it to the end of the session Smiley Happy

Edit: Great point @scared01! Smiley Very Happy
