Back to skewl... to prove to Dad that I'm not a fool!
"BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!!!!"
That earth shattering surprise as you try to open your eyes, and suddenly remember what day it is. You don't want to be torn away; your bed is so warm and the promise of what kind of dreams it bears it irresistable. Pulling back the sheets, you rub your eyes and give one big stretch and a yawn. It's only dawn but the time moves on and you think "just 5 more minutes...."
So I'm certain you've all been eagerly anticipating this time of year again... No? You've all gotten so used to sleeping in just that while longer, spending your days assessment free, doing what you want when you want knowing there are so many days in the holidays to do all those things you shoulda, orta, coulda done before this day has arrived again. And suddenly it's hear and all those memories of free time have blissfully disappeared into a new thought..... Today I go back to school.
Starting school can mean meeting new people, juggling new subjects and even that dreaded H word....."Homework!" And with this in mind, we often experience a range of different emotions towards our education and the environment we enter in. For me, the first day was always uncertain. Coming from a small country town, you never knew what each year would bring. How much effort I needed to concentrate into my work, what teachers I was stuck with, whilst upholding a social life and all other activities I endured during a week.
Whether you're heading back to school or TAFE this week - or those days are long gone but you've got some tips to share, join us in the forums this Monday (3rd of February) at 8pm AEST, to tell us about your first day of school.
Woo! Glad I wasn't working tonight, this was a rad chat! See you next week. 🙂
I know I'll be taking away some great tips with me tonight.
So thanks to everyone who was able to pop in for a chat and share their fears, loves and tricks that make studying just that little bit easier.
I've really enjoyed this convo.
Hope to see you all back here next week 🙂
Goodnight everyone, and best wishes and good luck for all your study-bugging ahead. One day, you'll be able to look back and be proud of everything you have done along the way!
Mwah!

Motivation tip; it's very basic but it works for me, just get started. I find any effort is better than non and quite often starting is the hardest part
Yes...after abot 10 minutes it jjust becomes more natural.
Thankyou so much guys for joining @Jordo-RO , @Lightuptheworld & myself tonight!!
Its been awesome hearing all your tips, tricks, goals, worries and studies.
There is certainly motivating knowing your not the only one with similiar worries when it comes to studying again!
Reach for the stars guys! You all doing such a great job in all your fields of study and we look forward to hearing more about you all in our forums.
Thanks for coming everyone! Great discussion tonight ! Here's a summary of what we chatted about! 🙂
Wow, we did some awesome stuff in the school/uni break including travelling overseas without parent, going home to visit family and friends, going to the zoo, looked after puppies, got offers for uni and went to concerts among other stuff.
What do we love most about going back to school? Stationary shopping, seeing friends, getting closer to finishing degrees, starting degrees, getting involved in projects, new textbook smell, stationary (haha :P)...
The pressure/stress, anxiety about doing well enough and getting everything done, having less time to play with, studying stats, worry about procrastinating too much, expensive textbooks are some our least favourite parts of going back to study.
We're studying all sorts of things including psychology, languages, sociology, occupational therapy, radiation therapy, behavioural science, primary education, early education and care. School can be tough/stressful sometimes or sometimes our personal lives can impact our studying.
-We can get stressed out by deadlines, whether we'll get the marks we want, waiting for results, group assignments, struggling to learn new content, group assignments.
-To reduce our stress we do things such as use mindfulness or meditation, do yoga, start assessments early, retail therapy, listen to music, go for a walk or run, write, prioritise and plan your time and get rid of things if you can, talk to other students, craft, play with pets, dance.
-Who can you talk to if things become too stressful? Tutors, lecturers, teachers, Kids Help Line, psychologist or counsellor, friends, family, student support, lifeline.
Did someone say organised?! But, seriously, here's some of the ways you keep track of things: Make lists and stick to them, sleep (try to have routine), use a diary or calendar to keep track of everything, have a schedule, stay on top of your reading, keep memos/reminders on your phone, break big tasks up into smaller ones- more manageable that way, create/join a study group- can be a great way to keep each other accountable,.
Your number one motivation tips: Remember that it will end and one day it will all be worth it, use exercise and positive self talk to keep you energised, study with others, embrace learning new skills and those you already have, allow yourself to take breaks because that way you can come back with a fresh mind, look at the big picture...where will this lead.
Our study goals: study hard, use more positive self talk, find a balance and everything else, get the best marks possible, make the most of the experience- attend all classes, etc, finish degree, pass, not procrastinate, don't compare with others, just give things a try.
@Learn-to-fly too true!
I find starting the hardest part, but I ususally set my word limits for my assessments like 300 words a week to I ensure im convered. That way dont feel so pressured into starting so difficult
Have you got any study goals for the next year? What are they? I think to ACTUALLY study, instead of watching lolcat videos, will be a good start. 😛
Give us your number one motivation tip! It's not so much picking things/ideas/thoughts that keep me motivated, it's knowing when to stop, have a break/study something else for a while and then returning to it with a fresh and open mind.
So many motivation tips but certainly knowing the end product of all the hard work is near definitely seems to keep most of us on our toes again!!
Have you got any study goals for the next year? What are they?
I haven't really set any study goals for this year, but I think I'm just going to keep playing it by year, try my best and hope for the best.
@Bee Its good to chill back and taking things as they come sometimes! I did that when I started my Diploma, then suddenly I found things I wanted to do with my study and the goals appeared!
Have you got any study goals for the next year? What are they?
To pass my placement, maintain my current marks and finish my degree are my main ones for uni. I am also at TAFE and my goal is to complete that course by July.
@delicatedreamer good on you! reach for the stars!
@dreamcatcher aww but they are sooooo cute! I want to love them all but I just can't! Next thing is the ridiculous vine vids!
My goals are just to make it through while making sure I have perfect balance. I will be studying, working and volunteering this year so if I make it to the otherside I'll be thankful!
My study goal is to work as hard as I comfortably can, and get the best marks I can without endangering my health. Also to make my parents and one of my sisters proud.
If I can look in a mirror at the end of the year and like who I see staring back at me, then I will know hat I have achieved my goals.
@florenceforever they certainly sound like responsible goals! I'm sure skippin class doesnt help with the grades 😛
@unrealreality i'm sure that what ever you achieve in life, your parents and your sister will always be proud of you!
Have you got any study goals for the next year? What are they?
My goals are really just the same they are every year:
- Study hard - but don't over do it
- Stop being so hard on myself. A distinction is not the end of the world!
- Find a better balance between study and other
- Procrastinate less, but still sometimes
- Make the most of my uni experience - and don't skip out on any classes!
Have you got any study goals for the next year? What are they?
Actually following a study schedule this year so I can get everything done and assignments in one time!
Oh and having relax time when I need it. 🙂
Have you got any study goals for the next year? What are they?
Don't compare myself to anyone else and I will be just fine.
@_sagira_ This is a really epic and important point!! It's far to easy to get caught up by comparing yourself to others 😞
