[CHAT] Booty dancing and other ways to exercise when you hate exercise!
Some people set their alarm, wake up bright and early and go for a run or go to the gym and absolutely enjoy it, then there's people like this guy:
But hey, that's okay; different people, different bodies.
Sometimes the traditional form of exercise is not for everyone. Some people stop themselves from exercising because they hate it so much, does that sound like you or someone you know?
My cousin got a gym membership for a year, hates exercise and hasn't been for 2 months. Waste of money? YEAH!!
We all know the amazing benefits of exercise though right? It improves your health, mental health, reduces the risk of you getting diseases like diabetes or cancer and improves your quality of life.
Even though you know all that you're probably still thinking thinking, "yeah yeah yeah, I still don't like it" and that's actually totally fine. Waking up to run everyday or going to the gym and doing the same thing every day does sound boring, but there are so many other ways to exercise without actually exercising!
For example, dancing to your favourite songs (twerking never hurt nobody), getting a dog (the best exercise buddy), cleaning (yes! odd but you really get your heart racing with it) and swimming (refreshing and calming at the same time).
In this Getting Real session, we are going to talk about altenative ways of exercising. We want to know what other ways you exercise and how well it works for you. Come ready and pumped guys let's work out how to work out?
So join us this Monday 19th October 8pm AEST and maybe get some tips for you and your loved ones too.
Whoa and that's it for another GR session!
Thanks everyone!
Next week we'll try something a little different and will run a slow motion Getting Real session over the week!
Stay tuned for more details
And if you're not quite ready to have a snooze, check out our ACE week threads!
Do you know anyone who might need to think a bit more about what we have talked about today? How would you help them see exercise differently?
I have a few friends who go to the gym heaps and smash protein shakes like most people would drink water. I have chatted to them a bit about it before, partly because at one stage i though that having a 6 pack and some good biceps was an awesome way to get the attention of the opposite sex :P.
It's definitely not my place to tell other people what to do, but I might ask them what motivates them, and whether they have thought about the difference between being fit and being healthy. Maybe they are both fit and healthy, or maybe they only care about being shredded right now and not the other awesome things that exercise can bring.
I think all you can do to help someone see things differently is to let them know there's other options that they can choose if they want to.

Probably me, haha. Seeing exercise in the form of different activities (mixing it up, rather than thinking that I'm inclined to stick to a routine) is a start to getting out and being on the go
Okay, i challenge everyone here to pick one thing on their list and try it in the next month 🙂
It's up to you if you accept the challenge,
But let me know if you do!
Haha okay @stonepixie I am going to look into doing a high ropes course! Except i really want to just go spearfishing more 😛
How will you stay healthy this week?
This week is very intense for me because i have to do a lot of things for ReachOut! So I am making sure i take care of myself and being healthy by remembering to "switch off" when i finish work. I could probably just work alllllll day and night, but I am making sure I don't do that and when i do have to do a bit of extra work, i make sure i have time off as soon as I can afterwards so I can give my body a chance to rest up a bit it's a big help that my boss @Sophie-RO makes sure that i take that time off too because she's awesome :).

Oh hey @stonepixie, bye @9Bronte thanks for joining up!
@FootyFan26 I really like your answers to this question!
Hahahaha @stonepixie
Alrighty! Here's our next question:
What type of exercises would you like to try?
More martial arts, AFL because @FootyFan26 reckons it's awesome, Sailing a Moth (which looks like this)
Swing dancing, fencing, Tough Mudder, that cool ninja warrior game where you have to go through a crazy intense obstacle course, paintball, yoga, tai chi
I think that's about it 😛
Exercising can sometimes be seen as a chore. What tips do you have to get into the groove of things?
I make my exercise and fitness stuff a part of my day to day life. So walking and riding my bike whenever I can, and just getting up every 20 minutes or so.
I also look for activities that I want to do rather than feeling like i have to do. I moved towns a month ago, so I'm currently looking into trying a new martial art (Krav Maga). It's weird, because it's a thing i like, so i get excited about it and can't wait to get started. Which is the opposite of when i tried going to the gym for example. It was always hard work and i kind of had this weird thought process in my head where i had to think about why it was good and therefore HAD to do it.
So for me at least, if it seems like a chore, it probably is a chore and i don't do it, the important thing is to keep looking until you find something you really enjoy though 🙂
We don't have to go to the gym to stay healthy, there are lots of other ways to be healthy! What's your favourite way to get healthier?
The biggest thing i do to stay healthy is just to get off my Butt every 20 minutes. Even if i just stand up and walk around and then sit back down again.
The second biggest thing i do to stay healthy is to try and get enough sleep. It seems weird, but if i just get 8 hours sleep a night, and if i do that regularly, my brain is happy, i don't get sick as easily and I seem to have energy to do other things!
The third biggest thing i do to stay healthy is walk 10,000 steps a day and try and climb 10 stories on some stairs too, i am not sure if it actually helps, but i feel better on days like that, and seem to sleep a lot better too 🙂
The 4th biggest thing i do is drink lots of water 🙂
the 5th biggest thing i do is stuff i like to do that's active, I like Spearfishing, so i go and do that every weekend and I like riding my bike, so i ride my bike to work and to the shops instead of driving or catching the bus.
I think it's interesting because exercise is actually a fair way down the list of things that keep me healthy!
We don't have to go to the gym to stay healthy, there are lots of other ways to be healthy! What's your favourite way to get healthier?
- Eating healthy! - It's like half the battle
- Finding out about strange yet awesome-sound stuff that I've like to try out: Aerial yoga, rock-climbing, trampolining, kayaking - there's so much neat stuff out there to try
- Going for walks outdoors with friends
We don't have to go to the gym to stay healthy, there are lots of other ways to be healthy! What's your favourite way to get healthier?
For me it is dancing, when I dance I not only feel happy but I actually sweat and when I'm done I just feel more positive and uplifted. I also drink heaps of water and sleep like crazy and those are my favourite things 🙂
For me being fit is being able to win at soccer and it's also being healthy, if i can't play defence then I'm not healthy.
Heya @Derpington! Welcome to tonight's chat
Glad to hear that you love your sport!
Hm, the position you play out in the field is your way of finding out if you're healthy or not?
