[CHAT] Booty dancing and other ways to exercise when you hate exercise!

Some people set their alarm, wake up bright and early and go for a run or go to the gym and absolutely enjoy it, then there's people like this guy:

alarm-clock-gif-destroy.gif

But hey, that's okay; different people, different bodies.

Sometimes the traditional form of exercise is not for everyone. Some people stop themselves from exercising because they hate it so much, does that sound like you or someone you know?

My cousin got a gym membership for a year, hates exercise and hasn't been for 2 months. Waste of money? YEAH!!

We all know the amazing benefits of exercise though right? It improves your health, mental health, reduces the risk of you getting diseases like diabetes or cancer and improves your quality of life.

Even though you know all that you're probably still thinking thinking, "yeah yeah yeah, I still don't like it" and that's actually totally fine. Waking up to run everyday or going to the gym and doing the same thing every day does sound boring, but there are so many other ways to exercise without actually exercising!

For example, dancing to your favourite songs (twerking never hurt nobody), getting a dog (the best exercise buddy), cleaning (yes! odd but you really get your heart racing with it) and swimming (refreshing and calming at the same time).

In this Getting Real session, we are going to talk about altenative ways of exercising. We want to know what other ways you exercise and how well it works for you. Come ready and pumped guys let's work out how to work out?

So join us this Monday 19th October 8pm AEST and maybe get some tips for you and your loved ones too.

So we seem to agree that health is a lot more than just not being sick and also a lot more than just what your body looks like. The next question is about how popular media represents these things.

2. We get surrounded by lots of images of people in the media who look a certain way and this seems to be called "fit". Do you think the definitions of "healthy" and "fit" are different? What are the differences between "healthy" and "fit" to you?

I agree with you all Health is more holistic whereas fitness is a bit more physically focused.

I enjoy playing AFL because not only is it physically intense but I find it relaxing and good for my mental health as well.  I also enjoy drumming because I can get tired in that too and it takes a lot of focus.

(Who knew getting thrown around around like a ragdoll and jumped on was relaxing!?)

Geez I love being at the bottom of those!  Smiley Very Happy

@FootyFan26

I know how you feel! I used to play Winger in Union (which i totally admit is way less intense than AFL). I always got in trouble for running into Mauls 😛

It is awesome how physically active you guys all are.

Exercising can sometimes be seen as a chore. What tips do you have to get into the groove of things?

I find that choosing an activity that you enjoy is the most important part. Whether that's a team sport or something really out there (like quidditch, roller derby, aerial acrobatics, etc.), it can give you a huge motivating boost to keep going! Doing it with friends is also a bonus too, since it makes you get off your butt and encourages commitment to exercise Smiley Happy

  • Mix it up a bit
  • Find something you enjoy
  • Listen to music
  • Take a scenic route to run instead of the treadmill facing the wall
  • Grab some mates to chill with
  • Encourage yourself with selftalk, quotes, etc.
  • Don't make it too comfortable and challenge yourself a bit -  don't make it too hard

You should def have a go at AFL @Ben-RO !!!!! I played in our local club years ago, and dated an AFL player for two years. I love all codes, but AFL has different strategy to Rugby. My dad hated it and allways criticsised Warwick cCapper, so that is why I went to try it to prove him wrong.

Hey, hey, heeyy!

  1. What does being healthy mean to you?

Taking care of your mind body and soul. So looking after yourself with what you eat, what you do, who you hang out with and stuff like that.

  1. We get surrounded by lots of images of people in the media who look a certain way and this seems to be called "fit". Do you think the definitions of "healthy" and "fit" are different? What are the differences between "healthy" and "fit" to you?

Yes! They are definitely different. Most of the time they can be used interchangeably, but when you take into account your whole health and not just your physical health, just because you are fit, it doesn’t mean that you are healthy. Your fitness habits may be ruining your health as a whole. But then you could be mentally fit and physically unfit. And well, the list goes on.

  1. We don't have to go to the gym to stay healthy, there are lots of other ways to be healthy! What's your favourite way to get healthier?

Well, I tend to my mental health more than my physical. Opps. But in doing so, it puts me in a better position to take care of my physical.

But having said that, since I have more visits to my GP than I normally would if I didn’t have poor mental health, everytime I go in and there is something minor bothering me, I will bring it up. And then there was the time when my whole class came down sick with chest infections and stuff, I was like ‘you are checking my chest for an infection’ to my gp.

I’m not really into the whole gym thing, but I do like going on long walks and sometimes on these walks, I feel like jogging for a bit, so yeah.

Then there are things like standing at bus stops rather than sitting and if there is the option, I will always take the stairs. Yes, I’ve been in a building where that hasn’t been an option. 😞

Exercising can sometimes be seen as a chore. What tips do you have to get into the groove of things?

Doing things for fun, that actually have exercise benefits to it, like rock climbing and high rope courses.

Having a gym / fitness buddy!

This one time, a friend and I organised to go walking early in the morning and both awoke not wanting to go, but didn’t want to let the other down. So we went for our walk.

Note: From now on, my posts won't be this colourful. 😞

Thanks for that. Self care has pulled me through every day. It's something I had to learn and it took a couple of years growngup getting the hang of it. I just watch what i eat, don't eat in front of the tv, have a shower each day, take time out to just sit on the verandah looking at the sky and trees, and not leting myself get too stressed. And not drink excessively when i'm out.

@9Bronte

I think it's cool that you have such strong self care skills! I feel like you have a few really cool things that you do every day? Is it easy to do that every day, like taking time to chill out on the verandah for e.g? I am not very good at making a routine out of it 😛

This is mylast question sorry! I just got the call to help out the fam, cos it's 9pm Cat Tongue

So...

We don't have to go to the gym to stay healthy, there are lots of other ways to be healthy! What's your favourite way to get healthier?

Routine is definitely hard, @Ben-RO , but I gauge myself my stress levels and feel good hormones, so I just judge it from that. My fave way to get healthier is make a plan and to do list. If i don't make time for when i'm going to go do my sports, then the whole day is a shambles!

I love moving my body so I'm lucky I don't have real health issues.

Okay I gotta go! Bye and thanks!!

What type of exercises would you like to try?

Not necessarily try, but do more of. Hahaha. I would like to go rock climbing more, but most of my friends don't like it / don't live around here. Same as high ropes, but that is also exxy!

Maybe learn some self defence, and I hear spin classes are meant to be fun. I've also always wanted to try yoga, but I don't know a thing about it, so just thinking about going to class can be paralyzing for me. 😞

I want to do a spin class too but I heard that it is intense, and I would love to do self defence just to feel more confident in defending myself if I need to 🙂 @stonepixie

What type of exercises would you like to try?

There's so many! I'd love to try:

  • Swimming  - Never been a strong swimmer, so it's time to improve!
  • Xtend Barre - The last time we mentioned anything exercise-related here on the forums, someone mentioned this. Apparently, it's a pilates-jazz-aerobics hybrid.
  • Roller Derby
  • Lacrosse
  • Bikram Yoga
  • Kickboxing
