[CHAT] Finding balance

What is B A L A N C E ?

Balance =
balance1
Literally!

Our lives can be so busy! Work, study, friends, family and then on top of that the personal stuff that we are dealing with - it can sometimes feel like we're always busy playing catch-up! So what does balance feel like? And why should we be seeking it?

When you feel balanced your life, you feel a sense of stability. You feel organised, healthy and relaxed. Balance is about feeling like all of the elements in your life are being tended to, and nothing is felt left behind. Paying attention to committments (like work or university) but also prioritising fun, love and self-care.
Why can it sometimes be so hard to strike a balance? We are going to try and find out on Monday's Getting Real.

What are the M Y T H S?
Let's smash some of those myths around balance so that we can better understand it!

Myth: You must be evened tempered
RealityBalance can involve a full range of emotions

Myth: A balanced person is good at everything
RealityBalance requires prioritising

How do we A C H E I V E balance?
Let's think about the I N T E R N A L and E X T R E R N A L things that need balancing.
Internal: mind, heart and health. A balanced mind is challenged intellectually, as well as having time to rest. For the heart: both give and receive love. And with your health: eat nutriciously, drink water, and move your body but find the time to rest spoil yourself with treats.

External: work, family, fun and social. Push yourself to achieve goals at work, but step back to see the bigger picture and learn that you can say no. Balance with your family is about fulfilling your responsibilities while also creating healthy boundaries. When it comes to fun, make time for the things you love, while not over doing it. Lastly, with your social life it's about satisfying your social desires, but also taking the time out for yourself. How much you need will depend on where you sit on the introvert/extrovert spectrum.

What do you do if you are feeling U N B A L A N C E D?
  1. Acknowledge… what is really going on? Be honest with yourself.
  2. Examine… where is the imbalance? Is it internally or externally?
  3. Set goals… make a list.
  4. Plan tasks… daily, weekly, monthly.
  5. Reflect… what worked? What didn't work? how do you refocus? what fears or anxieties did you have?
  6. Prepare… to overcome the negative talk or the anxiety
  7. Empower…. what do you need to keep reminding yourself?
  8. Connect… make sure you communicate with your loved ones

Make sure you tune in on Monday 1st June at 8pm AEDT to find out how we can achieve a healthy balance in our life, and how it is okay if we experience some set backs along the way.

Thank you for joining us for what has been another awesome GR sesh. See you next week Monday 8PM AEST.

Today we spoke about:

Allocating and prioritising enough time and love to different aspects of your life that include: school, work, hobbies, friends, and family. It is also about maintaining healthy mental, physical and emotional health, which includes sleeping well.

Good grades, social life and sleep are all important factors that contribute to living a well balanced life- but as discussed, there are more factors that need to be considered.

Looking after yourself to try and stay balanced can include treating yourself to that extra slice of pizza, going for walks, being creative, binge watching copious amounts of TV, meditating and exercising.

Making checklists, using a diary, cutting back on responsibilities/knowing your limits and asking for help are vital ways to make sure you’re not overwhelmed by everyday responsibilities.

Yoga, mindfulness, meditation and sports are great mental well-being exercises to help with maintaining balance.

Balance is different for everyone, often we find ourselves seeking to meet unrealistic representations of what a balanced life looks like- do what works for you!

Often we learn vicariously through other people how to lead a balanced life- our friends, TV stars, and our family members. They can inspire us to take more action in making sure we stay cool, calm and collected to lead well-balanced lives.

Some advice we’d like to give someone who is struggling to find balance is:

-Not to stress over trying to be perfect. Do what works for you!

-and… to “ jump onto this forum and read all of the amazing suggestions that we have made tonight!! Haha”

What advice would you give someone who is struggling to find balance?

I think I'm the one who needs the advice! Smiley Tongue

Just not stressing over trying to be perfect is the main one.  There is no Perfect and some people need to be shown that.

WHO is someone you really idolise in your life, that you think has great balance? How do you think they acheive that?

I can't remember where i came accross this quote but it went a little something like this "You have the same amount of hours a day as Beyonce, make them count".

This ressonated with me as she is someone who seems to have it all! she has a successful career, beautiful husband and child and seems to have a great and balanced life.

We have the same amount of time in a day as her... i interpret this as we can achieve greatness if we allocated our time to striving for success and making sure we fit in enough time to look after ourselves in the process.

@jvkn this is very true! but like @FootyFan26 said, sometimes comparing ourselves can make us feel shittier 😕 haha we can't all be like beyonce... or can we 😛

@bessie94 I do a lot of comparing and because of my negative attitude that's all I do. I always think that I'll never be like them - handing all assignments in on time and getting 90+s on everything. It makes me even more angry at myself for not making the most out of the education that I'm grateful for having.

Yeah i do that too @FootyFan26 but try not to be so hard on yourself - you are amazing for just handing the assignment in haha sometimes it is hard to make the most out of it, its just important that we are trying and it sounds like you are aware and defs trying!!

What advice would i give to someone who is struggling to find balance? I would tell them to jump onto this forum and read all of the amazing suggestions that we have made tonight!! haha

@bessie94 that's the thing I don't hand them in and it makes me feel like total shit. (am I even allowed to say that!)

It makes it worse to the point where I need to see a counsellor.

@bessie94 I'm actually in secondary school. I don't think I plan on going to Uni to be honest. Hopefully the help I get at School will help me produce better work and be more like the organised dudes and dudettes.

See I'm comparing myself to them right now!

I dont really have an answer to this to be honest!

Yeah @j95 I also don't have a person I idolise for their organisation and balance.

I do however idolise a lot of footy players and try to play may games like them, enjoying every moment and giving it my all.

thats true @FootyFan26 who do you idolise? i think mine would be adam goodes, with all the recent controversy and what happened over the weekend its only made me like him even more, being proud of your indigenous culture is awesome and its inspired me to be proud!

@j95 yeah Goodes is a great idol for many. I think one of my faves is The Tomahawk, Selwood and Jobe Watson for their leadership skills. The Malthouse controversy is very interesting too. I don't think he should have gotten sacked.
Goodes really is a great role model for all.

Small but efficient steps are great to achieve balance- great ideas guys!

Time for our next question:

What are some mental wellbeing exercises you think you could practice when feeling like you don't have enough balance in your life? Meditation, self care, mindfulness?

As I said before, being grateful for the small things in life is what I like to do.

I also use the smiling mind app sometimes which is great to relax

I usually don't use these things though I like to focus on footy and look forward to it and when I can play the drums.  Getting out on the field more often would help me to let go of small things that I get angry over or worry about which would give me more balance.
