[CHAT] Getting Back Into Nature

Remember when you were a little kid and you would spend time running around in the back yard, or splashing in the ocean despite the arctic temperature, or climbing trees much to the horror and worry of nearby adults? Unfortunately, with school and work and other responsibilities, a lot of us don’t get to spend as much time outdoors anymore.

Spending time in nature, however, can be super great for our wellbeing. I know that a lot of people go for a walk, a run, or a surf when they’re feeling low, and it helps them to chill out.

If you want to talk more about nature and its effect on our wellbeing, come and chat with us this Monday 24th of April at 8:00pm AEST!

How can the weather impact our mood?  Have you heard of seasonal mood disorder?  How can you use nature to combat it?

Cloudy days make me feel a little down and weighed down a bit. Kind of like a black cloud hanging over. But how nature can help combat it? I guess those cloudy days are part of nature! :s I'm not sure...I can just think of doing non-nature things like maybe wear something bright or stay inside? i watched someone in a cooking video say they like to make a rainbow cake when it's dreary and not so sunny outside, to cheer themselves up

@cupcakes_032 i definitely do feel the same on really cold wintery dark days! But i weirdly kind of like the feeling, just as long as its overwhelming. I'm probably a little weird though 😛

goodnight @RevzZ 🙂

What are some things we can do to be in nature more?

maybe walking to and from the shops if they're kind of close by instead of taking the car. and like @Alison5, making time for it e.g. if walking to the train station, then give an extra 5 minutes to sort of slow down and enjoy the surroundings more. i'm usually in a rush in the morning and try to walk as quickly as i can so i don't miss the next train, but i really like it when the weather outside is really good and i have more time to get to the station because i can slow down and appreciate what's around more

I have heard of a thing called seasonal affective disorder. Which is also sometimes called "winter depression" the idea being that something to do with winter, maybe the light, temperature or perhaps even mold spores (nobody really knows for sure what's going on) causes you to experience symptoms of depression.

People suggest that lots of bright light can help and this is a type of therapy that a specialist might prescribe. I'd say if you're super, low and maybe depressed, by all means go for a walk in nature i reckon it probably can't hurt. But also see a doctor! 😛

I have heard of seasonal mood disorder and it mainly associates summer with more positive, happy emotions and winter with gloomy, negative times. I think if you take beauty for example, you can look at the flowers and sunshine in the summer and then in winter, there are rainbows after rain and rain drops themselves (especially when you catch them in the light at night time).

Have you ever turned to nature or outside when you were feeling bad? Tell us a little about what you did.
First thing that comes to mind is one time, I was feeling really down and just wanted to go outside for a bit. It was at night time and it was chilly, but I just sat outside on the grass, back leaning against the wall. I just remember that it was really quiet and calming, and it was like everyone was sleeping
I went back inside because it got pretty cold haha

What are some things we can do to be in nature more?

Well, going camping is one of my favourites! There's also just a bit of nature pretty much everywhere, even if there should be more, and truly wild places are much harder to get to.

Head out to a park near you, go for a drive to the local beach and have a walk, have a look at the national parks and wildlife destinations that're near you 🙂

Sometimes I feel like living in Melbourne is so busy and such a concrete jungle but places like Ceres are really lovely

@j95 Whenever I'm in the cbd I'm always struck by how much nature we've put into the city, with all of the parks and the botanical gardens and everything. Like how New York City has Central Park. But the city being right there does indeed give it a different feel to being in further out parts of nature and country.

5. What are some things we can do to be in nature more?

I think setting aside time or making an agreement with yourself to go outside if you aren't feeling so great is another way.

Yeah exactly @Birdeye and sometime the city is dark from all the tall building but then you don't have to go far to see something pretty

oh, and, I always think of Sydney as even more of an urban jungle, but like, it is literally made around the harbour. Beaches and the harbour and water seem like a major part of the city life still

What are some things you like about being in nature and what are some things you don't like?

I like how it's natural... haha. Just how the sun's always there (for now anyway :p), birds are singing and I guess it makes me feel connected to the world around me.. like when it's a really nice sunny day, and I'm just walking down the road, it all looks pretty much perfect. Oh it's nice when the light shines through those light green leaves...

Dislikes - pretty much what others have mentioned like bugs especially mosquitoes (a swarm of mosquitoes sounds horrible @roseisnotaplant!), extreme weather (too cold/hot), sun burning my skin (need that sunscreen!)
