[CHAT] I look after me

When you think about what self-care actually is, it really seems like a no brainer. Really, who wouldn’t want to do things that make them a happier, more mentally balanced and less stressed out person on a regular basis?

gr1.png

Even though it seems like a pretty obvious choice, a lot of us (me included) can be not too great at implementing self-care on a regular basis. Instead we might choose to do things that are easier or take less mental energy, like maybe spending hours scrolling through Tumblr… Not that I would know anything about that.

There are a few reasons why we might slip up a little on practicing self-care. For many, self-care can seem like it’s optional or even a bit selfish. In a world where we’re constantly pushing ourselves to achieve more and do more to reach strict ideas of what makes a “good life” it can be difficult to feel like you’re justified in taking time out to look out for your own needs. Self-care is something that we all need to do once in a while, no ifs, ands or buts.

So what actually makes something self-care? Self-care can be a really individual thing for different people, for example for one person going for a run would be self-care but for another it might mean baking a cake. All self-care, no matter what it entails, has one thing in common. Self-care all involves taking time to look after you, whether that’s physically, emotionally or mentally.

Want to learn more about self-care and how you can make it a bigger part of your life? Great! Come and join @safari93 and @Chessca_H on Monday 20th, 8pm AEST as we chat about looking after yo’self.

I suppose I practice self-care, it's not something I focus on though. It's just, I'll be feeling stressed or something so I'll take a break, read for a bit, something like that. I don't think of it as self-care, it's just something that I do for myself.

@Chessca_H as far as I know, I never learned about it in school. Not even in Health and PE, even though self-care should technically come under Health

@safari93 there are so many things that could be taught in PD/H/PE that isn't! What is consent and self-care and what does it look like, should definitely be taught.

@safari93 it's definitely something that should come up in school!

I think it's really interesting how we all seem to have learned about self-care from somewhere on the internet... 😛

@stonepixie that's a really interesting observation actually, since self-care does require you to be mindful of how you are thinking and feeling

Hey @holoholo!! That's a really great point, sometimes doing things that might seem basic and routine become self-care. It really depends on what you are capable of doing that day depending on your mood and energy levels

When did you first learn about the concept of self-care?

I first learned about it on the internet (on Tumblr, to be specific), and I didn't quite understand it at first. But I think that was because of the way it was presented to me, as now I know self-care is something you define, and doesn't necessarily have to involve bath bombs

But bath bombs are awesome! @safari93 😛

1. What do you think self-care is? Why do you think it is important?

I tend to find self care can be really basic stuff on the worse days- things like having a shower, getting out of bed, that sort of thing. On the better days, self care to me is just treating myself like I'd treat someone else. For me, it means not being so hard on myself when it comes to self-talk- criticizing myself, feeling self concious etc.

I think a lot of the time, it can be easy at this age to forget to take care of yourself. In my experience, this is true- and also in my experience, self-care is important, because things like grades and work and relationships can seem to improve naturally when you take that extra bit of care for yourself.

@N1ghtW1ng glad you could make it!! Definitely, you know you better than anyone else, so you know when you need to look after yourself and what you need to do

@ErinsAntics welcome!! That's a really good point, prioritising your needs first!

@stonepixie LOL I am exactly the same when I read, I almost forget that I exist in this world and not the one in the book

safari93Posted 20-07-2015 08:07 PM

@stonepixie hello!! I know that when I set aside time for self-care I have to 'unplug' myself from the outside world, which tends to ease a lot of the worries that I feel

stonepixie
stonepixiePosted 20-07-2015 08:09 PM
@safari93 unplug, I do. This just reminded me of the other day waiting for my psychologist appt. I was reading a book and was completely immersed in it, so I didn't even realise that my psych was standing there trying to get my attention. Hahaha.

@FootyFan26 welcome!! I definitely agree, finding an all-inclusive definition for self-care is hard because it means so many different things to different people

safari93
safari93Posted 20-07-2015 08:05 PM

@Chessca_H definitely, I don't think the term 'self-care' has been around very long! But I think the idea of taking time out or having 'me-time' has been going on for ages, but it's never had the same important connotation as 'self-care'

N1ghtW1ng
N1ghtW1ngPosted 20-07-2015 08:13 PM
@safari93 I agree, me-time is something that everyone needs to do, taking a little time out. I think it's the same as self-care, although self-care has more of a purpose. Self-care is for your health (mental and physical and emotional) while me-time was more of a break.

Hey everyone!!

Tonight's GR Session is on self-care - all of the things you do to look after yourself, stay healthy and treat yo'self. I'm here with @Chessca_H and we will be moderating tonight's chat!

Before you jump right in, have a look at our community guidelines, and make sure to keep them in mind during the session. If things get a little intense, you can always check out our emergency help.

So let's get started!!!!!

1. What do you think self-care is? Why do you think it is important?

I think self-care is sort of like staying healthy in a way, but more inclusive. It's not just about being physically healthy and eating well, but also taking time out for yourself and knowing that your mental and emotional health is just as important as your physical health

Hey guys! I made it! Yay!

1. What do you think self-care is? Why do you think it is important?
Self-care is taking care of yourself. Being healthy, mentally and physically, giving yourself some time to make sure you are okay. It's important because everyone needs to take a break at some point. A small break or a large break and self-care is a great way to do that because you know you best.

Welcome back!
