[CHAT] Stopping the Procrastination Cycle

If you’ve ever had to do anything ever in your life which you don’t particularly enjoy, then you probably know the feeling. That test is coming up, or that assignment is due soon – you know you’ve got to get to work! You’re so motivated, so ready, and you’re going to smash this out! You get your work out, your stationary, laptop, water, snacks – everything is ready to go!! You’ve started, and you’re working away at those notes, or starting on that assignment!

workworkwork

Then your phone buzzes – a distraction! – and suddenly your initial eagerness to work goes out the window. You check your phone, and then suddenly it’s three hours later and you’ve spent those three hours on YouTube looking at dogs.  At this point it’s almost lunchtime, so you give up and fix yourself a meal. And decide not to acknowledge the work you need to do because you’d rather have a nap, clean the whole house, or re-organise your closet than get back to work (fyi, all things that I’ve done trying to avoid an assignment)

procrastination

Procrastination isn’t just an excuse for laziness – it’s something that we literally need to work on in order to stop ourselves from falling into that trap. Because our brains can be so loud and demanding about not doing That One Thing, not knowing how to not procrastinate makes it so much harder to get things done on time.

And that’s where this GR Session comes in! Join us at 8pm AEST on Monday the 20th of July, to find out how you can learn to stop being anxiety-riddled messes when an assignment, test or other deadline comes around.

Going to the library helps for me. I find I'm able to accomplish things quicker. Also, I don't have the distractions of TV and music, etc.

I try to give myself allowance to procrastinate for awhile, but eventually it leads to procrastinating for much too long.

Yeah what is the appropriate amount of allowed procrastination? I think that would be tough.. i do it like,, oh ill eat and watch ane pisode of this tv show and then if my mood/focus/momentum is lost its hard to get into it.

I found going to the library or somewhere different than my house to study really helpful because everyone around me is doing work and it's super quiet, I feel like I need to be focused

@Ben-RO I've heard about pomodoro from a few different people. I find I need slightly longer breaks than the 5mins it recommends but it's still a good idea. Much better than people who think cramming for hours upon hours with no break is the best way of studying 😛

If you knew someone who was procrastinating right now, how could you get them to stop?

Yell at them 😛 😄 Haha nah, I find that agreeing on a set study time with a friend is helpful even if we're both in different places.

Have you ever successfully stopped yourself from procrastinating? Or do you know someone who can?

I don't know if I've ever stopped myself, but I've definitely cut procrastinating sessions short. It's either through my anxiety overwhelming me, or it's through a strategy to approach whatever it is I'm procrastinating.

I know someone who's super committed to working out regularly (something I'm forever procrastinating) and his strategy is to not lose momentum. As soon as he finishes work he goes straight to the gym, because otherwise if he went home before going to the gym he'd get settled and no longer feel like going

At times I've been able to. If I really push myself or tell myself how good I will feel when it's finally done, it makes me feel better. I know a friend who gets her phone taken away close to exams and assignments, so she has little procrastination around her. But she doesn't really like that method, of course.

In terms of uni work, often my fear of failure will kick in and motivate me to stop procrastinating and do some actual work. In other areas of my life I find it harder though

Usually when the panick sets in i run like the wind but my experience has been really different recently, I do find I procrastinate less and am focused. I think it's a combination of enjoying what I'm doing and just a tonne of selfcare that is helping me focus and stress haha

@Stealth_ninja & @lokifish that might help 😛 I'm trying to use my laziness to my advantage in some ways. I deleted Facebook from my bookmarks browser (as that's what I always do instead of writing) as I'm too lazy to type it in 😛

@Ben-RO actually I've used procrastination as a way of deciding if I genuinely dislike doing something. Sometimes I find that I procrastinate less/get distracted less when I'm doing something interesting. Although I do have those days when my motivation is nowhere to be found

I found that with my masters @safari93, I think cause I liked it i managed to get it done so that's pretty interesting.

Wow @Bookworm_K236 maybe you need some more assignments to get that book going haha

@lokifish & @Stealth_ninja I'd love to do it again. I've outlined a new novel idea but the words won't come out! Now I'm actually procrastinating on that 😛

@Bookworm_K236 Maybe you need another assignment to write so you can procrastinate on that instead of the novel 😛
