[CHAT] Stopping the Procrastination Cycle
If you’ve ever had to do anything ever in your life which you don’t particularly enjoy, then you probably know the feeling. That test is coming up, or that assignment is due soon – you know you’ve got to get to work! You’re so motivated, so ready, and you’re going to smash this out! You get your work out, your stationary, laptop, water, snacks – everything is ready to go!! You’ve started, and you’re working away at those notes, or starting on that assignment!
Then your phone buzzes – a distraction! – and suddenly your initial eagerness to work goes out the window. You check your phone, and then suddenly it’s three hours later and you’ve spent those three hours on YouTube looking at dogs. At this point it’s almost lunchtime, so you give up and fix yourself a meal. And decide not to acknowledge the work you need to do because you’d rather have a nap, clean the whole house, or re-organise your closet than get back to work (fyi, all things that I’ve done trying to avoid an assignment)
Procrastination isn’t just an excuse for laziness – it’s something that we literally need to work on in order to stop ourselves from falling into that trap. Because our brains can be so loud and demanding about not doing That One Thing, not knowing how to not procrastinate makes it so much harder to get things done on time.
And that’s where this GR Session comes in! Join us at 8pm AEST on Monday the 20th of July, to find out how you can learn to stop being anxiety-riddled messes when an assignment, test or other deadline comes around.
Hey there @lokifish! I didn't even think of the anxiety angle but that's so true for me as well! I procrastinated a presentation a week ago, even though I was told it was no big deal and that it wasn't being assessed, but speaking in front of an audience can be so anxiety-inducing for me, and so I literally did put it off till the day I was meant to present
Hi everyone!! Hi @Ben-RO!!
- What work are you most likely to put off? Is it homework? Chores? Work-related stuff?
It used to be homework and assignments, although now since I'm not studying it can be more diverse. Nowadays anything that requires what feels like a lot of thinking or feeling, or a lot of travelling. I'd much rather do something mindless like taking a walk or doing chores lol
Greetings humans. Tonight we’re talking about procrastination. We’ve been putting this chat off for ages. So I’m glad we’re finally getting it done!
Heh.

With all the business out of the way, here's question numero UNO!
- What work are you most likely to put off? Is it homework? Chores? Work-related stuff?
Hiya!
1. What work are you most likely to put off? Is it homework? Chores? Work-related stuff?
- Exam studying (like right now>.. should be going but 8 hours already is pretty solid, right?)
OH yeah, im bad with paying for things but im trying to be really good with that now but definitely understand that feeling @j95
Yeah interesting @Ben-RO @lokifish, there are some instances where id rather do the reading and some where id rather talk to the people. Interesting how that's different based on your personality/experience. Definitely understand anxiety... anything thats anxiety inducing i find really horrible.. i think thats why I'm always late to things cause i have to spend time psyching myself out for them haha 😕
Hey everyone!
What work are you most likely to put off? Is it homework? Chores? Work-related stuff?
Mainly School wor, unless i have a sac the day before, then i go crazy working.
What reasons do you come up with when you’re procrastinating?
For me I think i generally either don't notice I am doing it... for a little bit or I notice and then I kind of consciously do it 😛 Generally if my brain has wandered off of it's own accord, i don't fight it too hard, i just give myself a moment to wander off a bit more and then a firm time to come back to the thing i need to be getting done. Lots of timers on my phone!
What reasons do you come up with when you’re procrastinating?
For some reason I seem to have intermittent obsessions with very specific things, like a specific artist - i will suddently have to go and listen to every song they've ever witten haha or like there are these specific dancers that I really love at the moment and watching them is like watching magic so yeah i did a lot of that when i should have been doing assignments 😕
- What work are you most likely to put off? Is it homework? Chores? Work-related stuff?
Literally anything that needs to be done. But if I had a list of things I was procrastinating on and had no choice but to work through them one by one, the ones at the end of the list would be ones that somehow involve other people and/or are serious stuff requiring some higher level of responsibility.
Firstly, Excellent Troye Sivan meme - that brings back some memories of vlogs haha
- What work are you most likely to put off? Is it homework? Chores? Work-related stuff?
This is an interesting question because it varies so much. In my undergrad degree I feel like i procrastinated ALL the time but this year in the first semester of my masters I didn't really but I think it was just because I was panicking and stressed and somehow I just became productive. So I think my answer is, i procrastinate when I don't know how best to do the work or how to actually do it and the stress just makes me procrastinate out of fear maybe? I'm not sure.
I procrastinate chores and errands as well, I say it's because I'm lazy but I'm not really sure. It's so dependent on my mood as well which is annoying
Hellooo everyone!
What work are you most likely to put off? Is it homework? Chores? Work-related stuff?
Anything that's anxiety provoking (which is pretty much everything for me haha). Now that uni's out for the next month I need to find something else to procrastinate over 😛
