[CHAT]: Transitioning to higher education

Year 12 is over, you've got your results and you're sitting there thinking: what happens now?

Lectures, tutorials, majors and minors - the lingo used in the glossy pamphlets can seem like jibberish at first.

Then there's the other worries you might be having: How will I make new friends? What do I do if I'm not enjoying my course? Is it possible to pay attention in lectures without falling asleep? (Hint: it's not :P)

So whether you're just starting out or you've been studying forever, join us here at 8pm AEDT on Monday 23rd January, or click reply to start the discussion now!

@FootyFan26 that's fair enough. What subjects are you doing this year?

@j95 a bit of an unethical mix of History, Legal, PE, Health, Food and English. Not doing maths might of been a bit of a mistake though.

@FootyFan26 I didn't do maths and I am really thankful that I didn't because I probably wouldn't have gotten into the course I am doing now if I forced myself to do it. I think it's really important to do subjects that you love/enjoy/think you are good at rather than subjects that get marked up. My best subject was studio arts (which gets marked down a fair bit)!

Next question!

4. What are you looking forward to about studing at Uni or Tafe? What are you worried about?

Does anyone get bored doing the same thing everyday? Like work wise? Same job, same skills, same info?
@Alison5 great question! This is something I worry about quite often too. I think that is what attracts me to the social work/psychology field because there is almost no end to the type of work you can do! I would struggle to work in hospitality full time/for the rest of my life because I would get bored so I guess that's why I am studying at uni 🙂

What are you looking forward to about studing at Uni or Tafe? What are you worried about?

I am looking forward to learning lots of interesting things this semester! (Did I mention I was excited to go back? I'm sure I will regret saying this when the flood of assignments begins haha). I am worried about assignments and being stressed out.

When I first started uni I was really worried about making friends or not making any friends. And to be honest I really struggled with this - it isn't easy to make friends in uni - well for me it wasn't and often I felt really alone.

I'm worried about choosing the right course I guess.  I don't really know what I'm doing so I guess what I have to do is learn from others and ensure I look into things before I choose something.  I'm so lost with VCE subjects I don't know how I'm gonna handle all the unni/TAFE courses. Smiley Surprised

Please explain in baby terms what a 'tute' is. Is that just a tutor???

@FootyFan26 a 'tute' is a tutorial, which is basically a regular class at univeristy. There's the lectures in big halls with the lecturer/teacher at the front spewing information with everyone trying to keep it all in and a tutorial is like a regular class at school where you go into more depth, have more discussions rather than one person talking and the other listening.

I had no idea what it meant either when my sis and mum kept mentioning them. 😛

so a tute would be just like a class i have at tafe, in a classroom with a bunch of people like a high school class... ohhhh

@N1ghtW1ng, good explanation, but the ATAR is also a ridiculous system (in my opinion). The whole process means nothing.
It just gives anxiety to a bunch of young children for their schooling lives. It's practically a memory test.

I concur! @Alison5 Definitely no measure for your true intelligence or abilities!

Actually, on topic, I think maybe that was the shocker for me at Uni. I was used to doing relatively well at school (i guess cause i was just memorising stuff) and then I had to do hardcore physics and it was awful. I really struggled and then had really bad self-esteem cause i just felt really stupid. But masters is completely different, I think its maybe cause i care about it a lot. Sometimes i dont do that well but i dont think i mind as much

I know a lot of people used their ATAT etc to get into a similar area course then after a year change to a course that they wanted to do that needed the higher ATAR - doesn't always happen though

Another question, if you don't mind:

For those of us that aren't at Uni/TAFE/Work etc.

What is one piece of advice you would give?
Or what is one thing you would have liked to have known before you progressed to higher education?

How do you make friends at uni or tafe?

I guess create a study group with people in your class/group/tute whatever you call it. Smiley Very Happy

I'm not really of any use to @Alison5s question though.  Look forward to reading the answers.

From my experience it is easier to make friends during practical classes where you are forced to work in groups and group assignments and it got easier each year, and in that time I was more familar with some people. I made a really good friend doing a biomechanics group assignment - she's my name sake Smiley Very Happy except she lives in another country now so I don't see her 😞
