[CHAT]: Transitioning to higher education
Year 12 is over, you've got your results and you're sitting there thinking: what happens now?
Lectures, tutorials, majors and minors - the lingo used in the glossy pamphlets can seem like jibberish at first.
Then there's the other worries you might be having: How will I make new friends? What do I do if I'm not enjoying my course? Is it possible to pay attention in lectures without falling asleep? (Hint: it's not :P)
So whether you're just starting out or you've been studying forever, join us here at 8pm AEDT on Monday 23rd January, or click reply to start the discussion now!
Yes, I think its okay to drop out. As some people had said earlier, waiting a few years or taking a break can help find something you like. Same goes for changing courses and classes. We will just have to wait and see how it goes.
7. If you find that Uni/TAFE might not be the right fit for you is it okay to drop out? What about changing courses, failing or leaving a class?
Totally ok, i went from doing an electrician apprenticeship to my current apprenticeship and I love it. Sometimes things just dont fit it and its ok to change or just take some time out.
I'm gonna have to head to bed too - thank you all for a great chat tonight!
Take care tonight.

Yep, all of the above is totally okay! It's just about thinking about what that means and deciding what to do next. I guess i don't want to be like "it's always okay to drop out" because sometimes things are really hard, we stuff them up a few times and it's worthwhile in the long run. It's not always the right choice to walk away from something just because it's scary or very very hard.
Night night everybody! Thanks heaps for coming 🙂 Feel free to jump in at a later date and add your thoughts if you'd like to, especially @roseisnotaplant 😛
Thats totally right @j95
Its 10pm guys! We can keep chatting on here as long as you'd like thought, I think I might head though. I still have an assignment to proof read!
Sleep well
OMG @Ben-RO ME TOO, I HAVE HOPE YOU GIVE ME HOPE.
I did a super sciency degree and basically had the same realisation you did haha
The bribing with drinks is definitely up my ally @j95, I think that my attitude changed a bit from needing a whole group of friends to just one friend in each class. Someone i could talk to about the assignments like you said J and that has ended up leading to friendships but i also forgot hot competitive uni is sometimes, or maybe how competitive people are and I've had to make choices to not be friends with people that I felt weren't good for me and that was probably harder than making friends in the first place!
What is one piece of advice you would give?
Or what is one thing you would have liked to have known before you progressed to higher education?
This is a really great question @Alison5, thanks for asking it.
The thing i would have liked to know is that, you don't have to know everything now. You're not supposed to have it figured out! It's totally fine to feel lost and unsure about what you're doing because honestly, everyone else is too they're just good at hiding it! Don't do anything because you feel like you have to and "don't let anyone, ever make you feel like you don't deserve what you want".
We are constantly growing and changing and nothing is finite! Which can be a sad thing but also a really empowering and exciting thing because that means you can decide to change something whenever you like, that is the best part!
Also, the friends that you have now, the people you think you can't live without, they might change as you change, but you'll find even more amazing people along the way.
Thanks @Stealth_ninja and @Ben-RO for the advice. They are some very true points I will definitely try to keep in mind!
omg I bribed people with my baking hahaha - well I did with group assignments and still do
What are you looking forward to about studing at Uni or Tafe? What are you worried about?
I'm looking forward to the freedom - as in, me being in control of my schedule etc.
I'm worried i'll lose interest and do like 10 different courses that I don't enjoy anyway and therefore rake up a huge debt.
@Alison5 I think it is ok to change your mind and maybe you can do that a few times (you can always switch things before the payment deadline, so you don't get charged). Maybe if you find yourself not liking anything at this current time, it might be an idea to take a break from uni and go back when you have more of an idea of what you want to do. In saying that, you may love your course and not want to change at all. It is scary when you start and there is so much in the unknown, but things have a way of working themselves out 🙂 If you are really set on a course at the moment, I am sure you will enjoy it!
