[CHAT] We like to party

Moderator @FItzChivalry writes:

Partying is a word that gets most people excited at the first thought of it. The idea of partying is pretty awesome. Get a bunch of mates, music, a few drinks and dance the night away. I’ve spent many years doing just that, and I’ve had some awesome nights because of it, made a lot of friends and a lot of memories. But partying does have its dark side.

darth

I remember my first real house party, when we were all about 16 years old. I was the only one who really had an older brother, and he was “cool” enough to buy alcohol for the night. My best friend’s mum had even gone away for the weekend so we had a free house. The invites went out, and the party was gonna be awesome. It was like a scene out of one of those American college movies where they are running around the school throwing flyers at people. A few hours into the party it was clear that this definitely was going to be the best party ever. However things very quickly soured.

Unbeknownst to the organizers, one girl had brought herself a bottle of pretty hard liquor and decided it would be a great idea to polish it off herself. Next thing you know she’s in hospital, mums were called, tears were shed and it was definitely not the party to end all parties. That was our first taste of how quickly things could head south (the girl was fine in the end, but it was still a bit shock for us all).

partyon

So - partying can be awesome, and the majority of the time it is, but young people, alcohol and maybe even drugs is the perfect combination for problems. It happens from time to time. So how do we still have a good time without being too irresponsible about it?

Join us on Monday 17th Nov at 8pm AEST to discuss your party experiences and to talk about safety party tips.

@jvkn Drunk people can be such a pain in the ass sometimes haha but at the end of the day I'm sure he was grateful for you putting up with their crap 😛 And it's all about getting your mate's home safe in the end so good on you 🙂

Have you ever had to help friends out at a party or on a night out? How did you help them?

I have definitely had to step in a few times on nights out and have a word to some friends who have pushed it a bit too far, the first time I ever had to tell someone they'd probably had enough I felt pretty uncomfortable, as telling a drunk person to ease up can usually end pretty badly! I've learnt now that even if they get angry and defensive at the time, they're always grateful and apologetic in the morning.

What kind of safe guards or rules do you and your mates put in place to make sure any night out goes smoothly? How can you avoid nights going sour?

For house parties:

  • some of my mates had parents monitor how many drinks we've had and if we had too many would make us drink some water and wait it out before our next drink (sounds a bit lame but definitely worked no drunk dramas)

For going out:

  • making sure everyones had something to eat before, we often have snacks and food at predrinks
  • not sure we have any rules in place, but if one of our mates is completely smashed, no more drinks for them.
  • making sure everyone gets in a cab at the end of the night

This is definitely a good one! Plenty of food and water goes a long way

@florenceforever

Not letting people who have been drinking fall asleep on their back. I've put a LOT of sleeping drunk people in the recovery position

this is so important

For me the main safeguard is just surrounding myself with a bunch of cool, positive people. Positive vibes are usually the best way to deter and trouble in my experience! Also always making sure people have a place to crash and not drink more than they can handle! It's easier when you're with good friends though

- I always know that I can call my parents if I'm in an uncomfortable situation. No matter what time of night, they will come and get me. Sure, they won't be happy about it, but they prefer my safety over sleep.

- Making sure my friends are okay, giving them lots of water, making sure they aren't accepting drinks from anyone and not putting their drinks down.

@florenceforever Trusting your parents is definitely something I wish more people did! So many drunken problems would be averted with a quick (albeit embarrassing) call to the 'rents!

CONFESSION TIME:

My biggest fear of going out is that there wont be enough cabs to get me home and ill have to sleep on the street.

yes its ridiciolous yes it ends in tears and not until im in a cab do i calm down. Drunkness level is irrelevent !!!! it happens everytime

so for me... not having enough cabs

What kind of things can make a great night out turn sour?

That one friend we have who gets smashed within the first hour and attempts to hook up with every second person they stumble into.

Oh man the fun times I've had trying to rescue them

Yep, and trying to get them home safely... I know the feeling @safari93
