Changing Habits

Habits.

They can be good.

They can be not so good.

At some point we need to try to change the bad habits into good habits.

couchunstoppable.jpg

This can be really hard.

Habits form after doing a behaviour repetitively for a long time. This means trying to change that behaviour can require commitment and some strategies.

But there is good news, it can be done!

It might depend on the context @Ben-RO. If you were having a bad day perhaps it might bring you joy. If you were running late it might be bad because it could make you take longer.

A habit, like @ClCl mentioned, is something you choose to do because you want, and sometimes feel you need, to do. Eating dinner is something we do because we're hungry and require food to function. But eating your nails because you're hungry/anxious/worried/whatever isn't because we "require" it, but because it's something we've done once, found it helped, and then continued to do.

Does that work?

I feel there is a distinction to eating because we are hungry and need to, to survive. And eating to comfort ourselves, or an inappropriate food because it is what we always do.

so a typical behaviour on its own is not a habit but the way we carry out that behaviour can become a habit...

Yeah makes sense to me @ClCl!

And of course there are too kinds of habit, the good and the bad. So here's a question to have a bit of a think about that...

What kinds of habits are good? What kinds of habits are bad?

@ClCl I like that saying thing, but i am not sure if it's always true! I have been working out every day for the last month. It's pretty hard and I'm not addicted just yet! Meanwhile my intake of fried things is way too easy to keep doing 😛

How do you know when it is time to try to change a habit?

I think it's okay to have some bad habits, everyone's got them. So I guess it's up to each person to decide when it's time to change a a bad habit too. If all bad habits have some kind of negative impact; i guess you need to decide what's okay and what's not okay in terms of impact.

I also think about good habits, I have been trying to get into the habit of working out every day, so i picked a pretty easy workout and while I'm not hooked, it is definitely becoming a habit. So maybe i need to change the habit soon and make the workout harder.

So how do we kick a bad habit to the kerb?

What can you do to stop a bad habit?

How do you know when it is time to try to change a habit?

For me, if I am starting to feel distressed by the outcome of the habit, then I feel it is time to change it.

It might also be that someone (like a health professional) points out the consequences of continuing the habit and that kinda makes me realise I need to change.

What makes something a habit?

You know I'm not to sure where to draw the line between habits, routines, behaviours, and natural bodily functions or other things that are just part of being human. I guess a habit is something that you start doing to achieve something (whether good or bad) and that eventually just becomes something you do automatically without really thinking about it.

So we are certainly all in agreement that a habit is something we do over and over again.
But there might be an element of purpose to it initially @Ben-RO ?

What makes something a habit?

A habit is something you do on a regular basis.

So is everything we do on a regular basis a habit? Like is eating dinner a thing that we just naturally do as humans? Or is it something that we learn to do and is thus a habit? @j95 @N1ghtW1ng Or am i just really overthinking this one 😛
