Friends and Friendships

Hey everyone!

Lahna here 🙂 Hope you're all getting ready for the next GR session!

A good friend is someone who knows all about you, but still loves you! They help us through days when we aren’t feeling so great, make us laugh, cry, keep our secrets, get us out of sticky situations and are just there when we need them most. As you’ve probably guessed, next Monday’s GR is all about friends!

But what happens when a friend doesn’t live up to the expectations we had of them? Handling changes in friendships can be hard. How do you get friends, and keep them? How about handling conflict with your buddy?

It can be tough, but we all need a friend to lean on at times.

Join us 8pm AEST on Monday (6th June) for a chat about everything friends!

@Lahna not pushing boundaries is a really good point! I like to think before asking whether I'm asking for my friend's benefit, or to satisfy my own curiosity, and besides if you're being too pushy your friend will usually let you know

Hey there @PeanutJelly148, welcome!! Sounds like you have a good group of friends around you, and it's great that you try your best to support them too Smiley Happy

How do you show your friends that you can be a good friend too?

By being there for them when things are tough for them (and celebrating with them when they make it through!). By letting them know that they can talk to me about anything, including something that I might be doing which they don't appreciate, and by cheering them on when they start on a new project or venture in their lives

I really think that encouraging them is a great way to show support and be a good friend @safari93 đź™‚

Well I think letting friends know that you are there to support them, and asking them how things are going, but not being pushy for information or coming across as nosy.

How do you show your friends that you can be a good friend too?

a variety of things, most easy are supposting, encouraging, a shoulder to cry on, things like that.

Yeah my friends can be supportive sometimes, although right now me and a friend are having a bit of an arguement.

So I guess we have to ask ouselves how we can be the best friend possible for others... so:

@FootyFan26 teachers can be friends too! And that teacher sounds like they're doing what a good friend would do

@j95 that is a pretty cool thing for a friend to do when you're upset i reckon. It shows they care and want to help you feel a bit better. Both very awesome things.

@Lahna I do actually! Although it's getting much harder to get together now that we've all gone along separate career paths, but we still remember how we were in highschool so when we do meet up it we get along very well

@Lahna that's so nice! Support can also be just supporting each other's health and wellbeing, as well as helping you and each other through difficult times

Yeah it is, I mean they are! 🙂 And it sounds like you had some great support in year 12 as well, do you still maintain friendships with your year 12 buddies?

Can you describe a time where a friend has supported you through a tough time?

Well it was more of a period of time, but I don't know how I would have made it through the stress of year 12 without my friends. Dealing with so much pressure to perform well on all sides was really tough and affected my mental health pretty badly, but having friends who were going through it with me made the experience much easier for me. Plus, we could share notes!

We've covered a pretty broad spectrum of qualities which make a good friend, so let's get to specifics:

Can you describe a time where a friend has supported you through a tough time?

Not really because I don't let my mates know and if I do think they cam see Iisolate myself from them.

Someone who has would be one of my teachers that I consider a mate.  They understand and will just sit and talk to me for a bit to distract me.

I hope that in future you might be able to tell your mates if you really need them @FootyFan26, and we are ALWAYS here if you ever feel like you need a friend, or need someone to chat to about something tricky.

It sounds like that teacher really cares about you.

Showing them what you expect for them.  Or in a more well known phrase treating people as you want to be treated.

That's definitely a good way to make sure you have a good friendship @FootyFan26... But what if they start treating you badly?

@Lahna keep showing them respect while reminding them that their behaviour isn't acceptable.

Lots of my friends help eachother out by having study catch-ups during exams! I also have a bunch of gym friends and we all encourage eachother to get to the gym which is really helpful.

The only one I can think of right now is when my friends know I'm upset but don't want to talk they send me funny videos and memes
