Why so serious...?

Fun, silliness, and creativity! It's the stuff that makes life worth living – our hobbies, interests, past-times...whatever you call it, it's what brings people together, creates laughter, and stimulates happy thoughts. It's also very good for our mental health – what good can come of being serious all of the time?

Often, people talk about the kinds of fun things that they did at kids. Many of us will be familiar with games such as hide and seek, pass the parcel, various sports such as soccer and netball – and sometimes, talking about these things precedes the phrase 'if only I was a kid again!' - and sure, it's easy to miss our primary school days, but there are so many great things that adults can do for fun as well.

Some people like art and music, while others enjoy rock climbing and extreme sports, and there are a bucketload of other great activities for people who are willing to give them a go. The trick is to keep yourself engaged in something, and to really let your passion take over, because it was always the passion and belief in the game which made childhood play so exciting. Get out there and have fun!

Want to chat about your own childhood games? Maybe you're looking for some tips on finding a new hobby or club to join? Whatever it is, come join us on the ReachOut forums on Mondaythe 15th of July, 8pm AEST – see you there!

I think sometimes we can feel guilty about "having fun" and taking time out. Our lives are so busy and we forget to have fun and then when we do we think of the other things we "should" be doing. Having fun needs to be regarded as a higher priority in life!

Thanks Sophie,
@MM, hide and seek is so cool.. my science class tried to play hide and seek with our science teacher - he found us! 😛

@Sophie, sounds good! I'll try that when I next journal something, be interesting to see what it turns out as! 🙂

@Doris: outside of the box? I haven't really done anything outside of the box recently, but am wanting to get into some more creative things...

Heads down thumbs up was the bomb in primary school. The trick is to squeeze the thumb of a student that is not your friend (friends know you did it straight away). It is fun when your "victim" didn't know it was you

I really loved pinatas at birthday parties. Bring them back for adult parties! I remember I once broke the stick we were using to hit it...woops!

Hi Magga! I tried this left handed doodling this afternoon - it's hard!

It is not as easy at it seems and the reason it is effective is that we have to actively think about what we are doing.

The next step is to try writing - this is a bit more difficult

But a really effective journaling technique is an exercise where you write a question or something that is concerning you with your dominant hand and reply to yourself with your non dominant hand - the reason why this is effective is that we are engaging another part of our brain (normally the right side) which tends to be more creative and it will often give us some interesting answers.

Pretty cool huh! I hope you all might try it this week!
