Cool things to do in Melbourne?

Hey everyone, next week I'm heaidng to Melbourne for a business conference related to my uni, and so I won't have much time to look around during the week, but I've got one Saturday where I'm planning on doing all sorts of crazy things.

Any suggestions on what I should (or should NOT) do are welcome!

Rough plan for Saturday:

-couple of hours at the Queen Victoria Markets (I went there last time I was in Melbourne and want to go again hehe Smiley LOL)

-tour Old Melbourne Gaol (I'm unsure about this - is this any good?)

-State Library

-Royal Botanical Gardens (should I do a tour or just walk around myself?)

Places I've been before: Melbourne Museum, Docklands, Royal Exhibition Building, Flinders Street Station, Federation Square, Crown Casino

I heard that Hosier Lane is good for street art and also Degraves Street is a good laneway.

Anything else I'm missing out on?

Also is St Kilda worth travelling to for a few hours in the evening - say Friday evening?

Thanks!

Re: Cool things to do in Melbourne?

I don't live in Melbourne myself, but as a fan of exploring places your plan sounds really neat. I have zero ideas on Melbourne weather, but if it's hot, I'd go indoors around midday Smiley Happy
Plus, exploring botanical gardens on your own is really neat because you can take the time to look at the plants and go on your own little adventure. A tour is still neat if you want more info though, depends on what you want. Smiley Happy
Museums are neat too, but I have no idea what the Melbourne one is like so hopefully someone who knows more can help you out!
I hope you have a great day out @Chloee Smiley Happy

Hey @Chloee cool thread!

There are lots of places to explore in Melbourne. My favourites are

CERES Enviro Park - Brunswick (little bit out from the city but not long on the tram)

Sticky Institute - A place to make zines in Campbell Arcade, under degraves street near Flinders Street station

National Gallery of Victoria - They always have different things to look at

Edinbourgh Gardens

My favourite places to eat are

Vegie Bar

Lentil As Anything!!!! big yes!

Milkwood

East Elevation

Red Door Corner Store

Hey @Chloee !

If anything, you MUST check out the Eurika skydeck! I haven't been there for a wile now but last time I went it was friken awesome! You can kinda walk into this cage thing that overlooks the entire city. awesome views if it's not raining again.

Also went to the Vic markets about 3 weeks ago so yeah make sure you check that out too. And if you want a bit more, check out the South Melbourne market too. It's a bit smaller than the Vic market but it's only about 15 minutes away and got a lot less junk and more food Smiley Happy

Enjoy! Smiley Wink

Re: Cool things to do in Melbourne?

Oooh, what's the conference on?

Personally I'd mainly recommend the Eureka Skydeck if you're a landscape photographer who wants a really good shot of the cityscape (in which case I'd also recommend you bring a polariser for your camera. The internal reflections on the Skydeck are crazy. Going at sunset is also preferable, for obvious reasons.). At the end of the day, it's basically just a tall tower with a 360 viewing balcony of the city- if you're not super into getting a sweet shot, it probably won't be worth the $12 entry fee (although I think you can get it for cheaper if you're a student). It's also a little out-of-the-way, so I don't know if I'd add it to the schedule if you're tight on time (it is somewhat close to Crown Casino, however).

Definitely recommend giving the State Library a peek though. That place is gorgeous, even if you're not a photographer. Plus, entry is free so what's there to lose?

(Note: if the picture looks a bit weird and toy-like, it's because it was shot with a special camera lens- a tilt-shift lens)

The food in Melbourne is also pretty great, so I'd recommend trying out the odd cafe or two (starting with j95's suggestions, perhaps?), but personally I'd like to chip in and recommend Brunetti's. The little tea cakes that they have are simply wonderful.

Re: Cool things to do in Melbourne?

Thanks everyone for your help! @N1ghtW1ng @j95 @RandomName @Asche

Thanks for the food suggestions, as that it obviously the most important thing Smiley LOL

And looks like I'll have to go to heaps of parks and gardens hahaha! I'll try and squeeze in as many things as I can, although I might stick to the ones just in the CBD if I'm short on time, but if I do have the time the CERES Enviro Park looks amazing!

@Asche The conference is the RMIA conference. It's a risk management business conference - sounds super boring but oh well hahaha. I'm not that much of a photographer and the heights part of that has made me wary of going on the skydeck haha! And yes I really want to go to the state library because the pictures on google look stunning! Thanks for that photo, it looks so funny! I thought it was a lego recreation hahaha Smiley LOL

Re: Cool things to do in Melbourne?

The Cinningham Dax is a museum of art made by people who are mentally ill. It's so interesting and informative and I think it's a great effort by the museum to reduce the stigma around mental illness. I'd recommend a visit to everyone in Melbourne!

Re: Cool things to do in Melbourne?

@j95 I was going to recommend Sticky Institute too and then I saw your post Cat Tongue

I strongly recommend Vegie Bar and Lentil as anything too.

By the way Melbourne Music Week is on until 19th November so you can check out cool gigs while you're here @Chloee:

Re: Cool things to do in Melbourne?

I wouldn't bother with a tour of the Royal Botanical Gardens just explore it yourself! Smiley Happy A picnic there is always nice.

It depends what you are into but if you like vintage shopping, eating and drinking I would highly recommend Smith St and Brunswick St (you can catch the 11 tram from Collins St or the 86 from Bourke St). One of the nicest bars is the Black Cat on Brunswick st but there's heaps of nice ones around there - Naked For Satan is worth a look for the view. I also recommend Saba's Ethiopian Restaurant if you come to the area it's so good Smiley Tongue Also there's a lot of good op shops and clothing exchange stores in High St Northcote and Thornbury and Sydney Road Brunswick too if you are into that!
