Becoming a Moderator FAQs!

Why become a Moderator?

Volunteering as a Moderator is great for anyone interested in building skills to support other young people! Joining this supportive team is a fun way to meet new people who share your interests in helping others, and work closely with the ReachOut Forums staff.

Better yet, ReachOut will pay for all your flights, food and accommodation!

What skills do Moderators learn at the Annual Moderator Training?

Moderators develop skills and experience in peer support, leadership/mentoring, community building and moderation. These skills will help to support the wellbeing of thousands of young Australians, and can directly support study and work experiences in the future.

Do I need to have these skills already?

We don’t expect our Moderators to have all the skills right away; the training and ongoing support from ReachOut staff over the 12 month period will give you the knowledge and skills you need to thrive in this role!

Can I become a Moderator? Who is eligible to apply?

If you are aged between 18-25 and live in Australia, you can apply to become a Moderator! You will need to complete the online and annual two day face-to-face training, so that we can make sure you have all the skills and knowledge you need to thrive in this volunteering role! We do prioritise those applicants who have been Community Builders in the forums community.

What makes a Moderator different to a Community Builder?

Becoming a Moderator builds on the strengths of our Community Builder program, and will give you opportunities to grow your skills and knowledge in peer support and leadership!  If you haven't been a builder first, that's okay! We will give you some builder training before the workshop to make sure you have all the info you need Smiley Happy

What is the commitment?

Moderators will need to complete training including some online training prior to the workshop, and a two day workshop/training based in Sydney. We ask that Moderators commit to the program for 12 months. We aim for two hours a week, but are happy to work on a time commitment that works for you!
