Learning a Language
Hey Everyone!
Lately I've become very intrigued about different cultures, ethnicity's and specifically languages. Personally, I think it would be SUPER cool to learn a new language. Butttt (There's always a but), I have this thing where I'm super motivated to do something and then I loose that motivation after a while. Does anyone else get this or is it just me?
I was wondering if any of you are bilingual or know some languages and if you could share some tips with me about how to learn. I learn Japanese at school but I'm not very good at it I'm really interested in French or Italian - It looks so nice and sounds so nice!! but if you guys find that there is a specific language that's super easy I'm happy to try!
I was looking at Korean courses online and the topic was 'Eating' the word itself was easy enough but then there's different words for 'ate' 'eaten' etc. and it is just superr confusing!! Please Help this very confused little bean!
I am trying to learn polish to help me connect with my polish catholic ancestry because my polish grandfather passed way last year, so does anyone have any tips to help with learning polish?
@annabethxchase I have spent the last few years learning Italian! While I think it's hard to learn any new language, the good thing about Italian is that it's phonetic so that makes it a bit easier! I would say my #1 tip for learning a language is practicing a bit every day and really immersing yourself in the language e.g. listening to music, watching movies/tv shows (even if it's just the subtitles), talking to people if you can etc. I would also agree and say duolingo is a great app to learn a new language!
@KaiRoe learning Russian is something I've been thinking about for a while, any tips?
Oh man i totally get you. I'm looking to enrol in some Japanese online courses during covid-19 since i won't have time next year 🙂 i also studied french in high school and would love to continue learning but i also don't want to spend too much $$$ on classes :((
Tell me about the $$$ @wanderingwasp I want to continue learning too but it's gonna be a while until I can afford it lol. I've been thinking to check out free online resources or signing up for an online class from another country, hopefully it'll be a bit cheaper!
Hey! French, at least in my experience, is super easy to learn until a certain level and then it gets HARD but i guess, like anything youve just gotta stick with it. I'm currently learning Russian and learning a new alphabet is an expereince
I also want to go to Japan at some point @Sophia-RO! Seeing a Precure movie in a cinema and visiting a Precure store are both on my bucket list, so learning Japanese is going to make it all the better when I eventually go and do those things I think What kinds of things are you hoping to see and do in Japan?
I'm learning Korean at the moment. It is really hard but I'm determined to learn.
Hey, I'm an 18-year-old native French speaker! If you have any questions about French language, feel free to ask me.
See you!!
language learning's so fun!! even if i get them mixed up
to be fair though...
italian: essere = to be, german: essen = to eat,
but the answer to the question 'what do you want to do in future' should never be 'i want to eat a lawyer' lol (not a cannibal i swear )
That's so cool @nehels! I'm learning Spanish atm and that's super hard, I can only imaging how difficult french would be
Hey @annabethxchase!
I don't think French is super hard, you might want to learn French concurrently with Spanish, I guess it could help you! Good luck with your learning btw!
Hey @litgym!! Really?? Where are you from?
Hey Everyone!
So, I must admit... I've given up on Spanish.
Well, not completely but I'm putting it on hold (Pretty sure that's another word for procrastinating annabethxchase) for a little while because I've got to much going on at the moment.
But, Over the past couple of months (actually YEARS) I've realised that the English language is absolutely, horrendously difficult and must make NO SENSE to anyone learning it as a 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc. language! I'm gonna go over a couple of things that are totally weird.
1. The phrase 'Talking quietly among one another until I return.' My Science teacher said this to our class the other day and now I think about it... WHAT THE HECK?! What does 'one another' even mean? I can't even begin to wrap my head around that? Those poor, poor souls that need to learn this.
2. 'There, their & they're.' To be honest I barely know how this works to this day! Their is used: 'James went to grab their hat from the chair.' There is used: I don't even know?! They're is used: 'They are eating by the chair.' Honestly, who the hell came up with this ridiculous language?
3. Effect & Affect. Someone explain this to me, I legit have no idea....
4. The whole 'I before E except after C' rule is honestly a load of crap to be honest, there's so many words that don't apply to this - why even bother? All it does is confuse me
5. Then there's the different pronunciations for words that just confuse me to no end (WHY CAN'T WE JUST STICK TO ONE?!) Either or either, data or data, read or read, route or route, caramel or caramel?
OK, I just found this poem (Disclaimer: Not mine, someone elses, full credit to them!) It's long, try and read this - I did, I failed. I didn't put all of it in though.
Dearest creature in creation,
Study English pronunciation.
I will teach you in my verse
Sounds like corpse, corps, horse, and worse.
I will keep you, Suzy, busy,
Make your head with heat grow dizzy.
Tear in eye, your dress will tear.
So shall I! Oh hear my prayer.
Just compare heart, beard, and heard,
Dies and diet, lord and word,
Sword and sward, retain and Britain.
(Mind the latter, how it's written.)
Now I surely will not plague you
With such words as plaque and ague.
But be careful how you speak:
Say break and steak, but bleak and streak;
Cloven, oven, how and low,
Script, receipt, show, poem, and toe.
Hear me say, devoid of trickery,
Daughter, laughter, and Terpsichore,
Typhoid, measles, topsails, aisles,
Exiles, similes, and reviles;
Scholar, vicar, and cigar,
Solar, mica, war and far;
One, anemone, Balmoral,
Kitchen, lichen, laundry, laurel;
Let me know your thoughts or any other thoughts you have on this....strange.....language 😉
@annabethxchase i forgot all of those oops. i don’t think i payed attention in primary or high school really haha. i still don’t know what verbs, adjectives, nouns and whatever the others are.
i must admit effect and affect gets me everytime !
I'm thinking of making a thread for German stuff (because it's the only second language I consistently keep up with :P) does anyone want to make one for other languages? It seems as though we've got a couple of Spanish speakers on here 🙂 (Dora the Explorer binge watching sessions, anyone? :P)
@annabethxchase English truly is a weird and wonderful language, no matter how many times i see that poem i can never finish it either 😛
my teacher once gave me an awesome tip to remember affect and effect though! R.A.V.E.N.
R.Affect=Verb.Effect=Noun, it was life changing haha
