Learning a Language
Hey Everyone!
Lately I've become very intrigued about different cultures, ethnicity's and specifically languages. Personally, I think it would be SUPER cool to learn a new language. Butttt (There's always a but), I have this thing where I'm super motivated to do something and then I loose that motivation after a while. Does anyone else get this or is it just me?
I was wondering if any of you are bilingual or know some languages and if you could share some tips with me about how to learn. I learn Japanese at school but I'm not very good at it I'm really interested in French or Italian - It looks so nice and sounds so nice!! but if you guys find that there is a specific language that's super easy I'm happy to try!
I was looking at Korean courses online and the topic was 'Eating' the word itself was easy enough but then there's different words for 'ate' 'eaten' etc. and it is just superr confusing!! Please Help this very confused little bean!
I'm planning to try and continue learning Indonesian in my spare time once I switch schools. It seems like a shame to have the basics then waste it
Ahh that is awesome @seafaringstar! I did that with korean as well but I couldn't pronounce anything to save my life hehe WOW thats so cool that you can speak such a difficult language!
Oh boy, I learnt Indonesian at school, and have since forgotten a lot of it! 😛 @seafaringstar @lokifish
@mrmusic mine is reeeeally rusty too. I have an Indonesian uncle so there's not even an excuse for it haha
I'm bilingual. I speak native Chinese (Cantonese and Manadrin), fluent English(still learning Auusie English lol) and basic German.
I'm from Hong Kong, so my mother tongue is Cantonese. I also learned English and Mandarin at local school ever since I was a kid. I love English and western culture so I kept on learning and using the language outside classroom when I was a student, which made me who I am today, I can speak fluent English, communicate with native speakers without many problems(sometimes I still make mistakes but who don't make mistakes? Learn from it, that's what matters) and I have many English speaking expat friends in HK.
I did basic German course when I was at community college because I kinda like German, it's also easier for English speakers to learn and it wouldn't hurt to learn a new language.
I'm also interested in Spanish, so I might do Spanish course someday.
P.S. I'm still in Hong Kong and I'm planning to move to Straya to start a new life =]
That's so cool @carlosleekw! Australia is great! Totally come.
Hiii,
Here is an update (Don't expect much) on my Spanish learning extravaganza on Duolingo!
- Usted (Tu) Come Manzanas
I yelled this at my mother the other day and she thought I was saying some form of ancient swearing. Nooo Mum I just said that 'You eat apples.' *Rolls eyes teenager-like *
- The whole 'masculine and feminine noun thing'
Oh my this was WAY to confusing. When I 1st saw it I was like 'How the hell am I meant to know an apple's gender?!' Then I did a little more research and there's this thing called NORSEL and any noun that ends in that is masculine (mostly - gosh darn it leche/milk!)
- Pasaporte
YAYY ENGLISH WORDS!! Wow when I saw this I actually jumped for joy! Though I am really terrible at pronunciation I most sound like a constipated duck
- Taxi
Here we have a blissfully normal word! Soo happy!
- Those weird silent sounds in words - Tu?
OK, So I don't know ALL of these but still, I'm getting there. Tu sounds better than 'U'
Here is the end of this fabulousness ENGLISH IS SOOO MUCH EASIER AHHH
That was a lot of emotions in one post.
Especially what you wrote about knowing the gender of an apple haha.
When I was learning French I was thinking the exact same thing! Like how would I know if a table has a masculine or feminine pronoun?
Proud of you for learning Spanish! I've always wanted to learn it 🙂
Ahaha @litgym at the start I thought 'el' and 'la' meant 'a' not 'the!!'
German looks and sounds HARD @carlosleekw
Awww thanks @missep! In the lessons they didn't say anything about masculine/feminine nouns - it was like they just expected us to know!
Oh boy genders!! I learnt Italian in high school, and I can kind of read some spanish and french and italian because of that (yay for latin(I think)-based languages :P) Then I spent a year in Switzerland learning German, which is not easy considering they don't speak High German, they speak Swiss German (yay). And german has three genders! 😛 Such fun 😛
I hope everything is going well in your language-learning journey! It can definitely be awesome learning and knowing another language 🙂
Oh it definitely isn't easy @N1ghtW1ng! Wow that sounds super confusing - and I was complaining about 2!
@annabethxchase how is learning spanish ?
ill tell you a funny story - well at least funny to me haha
basically in french one day i asked my teacher “are we besties ?” she says “what are ‘besties?” and i said “best friends”. she straight up said no to me BAAHAHAH she didn’t even understand it was a joke but that’s alright she loves me (maybe not im a bit annoying 😬)
German is the same, Der die das dem lol
That's why I always say English is the easist to learn lol
@annabethxchase bahahah that’s great ! i didn’t even know half the things...i probably should oops. yeah the whole masculine and feminine thing can be confusing at times especially when you have to put the ‘el and la’ in front of the word. i think it’s those idk i can only think of french rn. spanish has a lot of words similar to english which is helpful 🙂
hey @annabethxchase im bilingual !
im not that into languages but im glad you are ! i tend to say “hola” and “adios” instead of “hi” and “goodbye” now ahahah.
i speak french and spanish. i find that spanish is easier than french but they’re both good !
some french - ‘bonjour(formal)’ or ‘salut(informal)’ means hello, ‘au revouir’ means goodbye, ‘come t’appelles tu?’ means what is your name and to respond to that you would ‘je m’appelle @annabethxchase’
a little paragraph about me
salut, je m’appelle litgym et **forgets all french even though i do 3.5 hours a week and I AM french what a lol** **gets google translate out (my brain only works in spanish for some reason)** j’ai quatorze ans. je fais de la gymnastic car c’est super !
au revouir ami 🙂
some spanish - ‘comme te llamas?’ **im second guessing myself if this is right** means what is your name and you would reply back by saying ‘me llamo @annabethxchase‘
a little paragraph about me
hola, me llamo litgym y tengo catorce años. me encanta gymnasia.
adios amigo
yeah this is so long and sorry if this doesn’t make sense bahahha. duolingo is a great app to learn languages !
OMG That's sooooo cool @litgym! That' so funny
I'm glad that french and Spanish don't have different characters in alphabets (probably a few differences) That's probably why I was so stumped on Korean!!
In the paragraph about you I read it like this: My name's @litgym blah blah blah weird dots on letters gymnastics is super! Wow I'm a natural (not)! Thanks Heaps for that - think I need to work on pronunciations! You're French!!?? Have you seen miraculous? (Fangirling inside)
Read Spanish like this - Llamas?? Where? I'm a llama? *Cue identity crisis*
You Paragraph - Hello, I'm llama @litgym blah blah enchanting gymnastics.
Will give duolingo a try. This is going to be harder than expected. Question: Did you grow up in France speaking French (What's 1st Language)? Thanks soooo much, your sooo great!
@annabethxchase BAHAHAHA OMG MLB !!!!!! such a great show what a lol
basically I said in my french text "hi my names @litgym and I am 14 years old. i do gymnastics because it is great ! goodbye friend" honestly i have trouble remembering things in french and spanish😬 european languages have a lot of conjugation things which are super confusing like past tense, present tense etc.
in my spanish text i said "hi my name is @litgym and i am 14 years old. i love gymnastics. goodbye friend". 'llamo' is the conjugation for I in spanish because you're saying MY(as in annabethxchase) NAME IS.... i have no idea if that made sense. 'llamas' means YOUR NAME(asking someone what their name is).
languages are confusing ! ive been to france once but i never grew up there. my "father" is french, i usually never consider myself "french" since i dont like being acknowledge like that, i much prefer australian. my "father" has always tried to teach me french but ive always rejected that and now i learn it at school... fun ! but it is a good language, just emotionally for me it's hard.
