Re: What are you listening to now.?
Alright I'm about to get nerdy about music, so brace yourself, but I'm flipping between "Deborah's Theme" by Ennio Morricone from the film Once Upon A Time In America and "Fairytale of New York" by The Pogues (aka the greatest band ever). [CW for a homophobic slur in the second vid!]
Why? Well, I'm writing an essay for uni on the impact of The Pogues on the Irish diaspora and I've getting really into the technical construction of "Fairytale of New York" - the opening melody is lifted almost directly from Morricone.
Once Upon a Time is, as far I understand it (I've never seen it), a quintessentially New York tale about Jewish-American gangsters that was also a favourite of The Pogues, so they plopped the melody in there to make it sound more "identifiably American", according to the accordionist. There's a lot of other stuff they did with the song that's impressive as a music nerd, but I just think this fact is particularly cool.
Okay, I've finished nerding out.
