Re: [Special guest] The elephant in the room

@redhead, why do you think people don't want to talk about it?

Re: [Special guest] The elephant in the room

Yep, stigma is such a massive element @N1ghtW1ng!

We need to smash that stigma out of the room!

Re: [Special guest] The elephant in the room

Why don’t we talk about the elephant in the room?

I think it's still seen as a very uncomfortable topic, and something that people should be able to handle on their own like admitting they need help to tie their shoelaces or put on a tshirt.

Re: [Special guest] The elephant in the room

We don't talk about the elephant in the room because there is a negative stigma around mental health and other serious issues

Re: [Special guest] The elephant in the room

So many insightful reasons @FootyFan26!!! Do you think some of these things could be remedied somehow?

Like from hearing from others?
What do you think?

and someone might not be speaking about certain things because they are worried about other peoples reactions or they don't know how to open up about the issue

Re: [Special guest] The elephant in the room

We definitely agree that stigma has a huge impact on talking about the elephant in the room, and when we talk to students at the schools and uni's we go to, many say the same thing. It's interesting how if someone hurst themselves physically, like they sprain an ankle, they usually won't think twice about chatting to a friend or seeing a doctor. Why do you think it's different when it comes to talking about someone's mental health?

Re: [Special guest] The elephant in the room

Being open about things like MH is seen as weak and to reduce this stigma we need to be more open. That can start with one person sharing their story and inspiring others to as well.

Re: [Special guest] The elephant in the room

Really good similies @Bay52VU!

Why do you think we feel like we need to know how to handle our mental health without any guidance?

We spend ages learning how to tie our shoes - our parents teach us, we do it in school. And for ages other people put on our t-shirts and then help us find the arm holes until we can do it ourselves.
Why dont we get that extra time to learn slowly with the guidance of other's for managing our mental health, do you guys think?
