CONTENT- SELF HARM

is it ok to hurt yourself by scratching your arm or soemthing to release your feelings because you don't know how to deal??

i have gotten to a point were it has been 3 or 4 weeks that i havve been depressed and i just dont see a way out of this rabbit hole. i have started to scratch at my arm again and i don't know how to tell my mum how bad its gotten because i don't want her to think its just a stunt to get out of school because its not. i am sick of prending to be fine when im not, i will smile in front of her and everything but i don't know how long that is going to last. WHAT DO I DO???

Re: CONTENT- SELF HARM

Hi @nala23 that's a distressing situation going on for you. I'm sorry you've been feeling so depressed and hopeless. Anytime you do something to hurt yourself, that's self-harm and scratching to the extent of hurting is considered SH.

It's a huge burden to pretend to be fine when you're not feeling fine on the inside. You don't have to talk to your mum straight away if you aren't comfortable but are you able to talk to a counsellor (at school or outside)? You can also call Lifeline at  13 11 14 anytime or call Kids Help Line at 1800 55 1800 tomorrow. I think you need to talk to a professional counsellor about what you're going through so they can guide you through this. It's very difficult to try and manage this on your own. What do you think?

Re: CONTENT- SELF HARM

Hey @nala23,
How  are you going today?
Like @Mona-RO has said it would be great for you to talk to a professional counsellor. You can contact Lifeline or Kids Helpline on the numbers Mona-RO said, or you can even contact headspace via online chat if you feel more comfortable.

Re: CONTENT- SELF HARM

Hi @nala23. Any action with the intention of cauing yourself pain/hurt is classified as self-harm. I'm so sorry that you're feeling like you need to turn to doing that. Thank you for sharing this with us, and please know that we're here to support you.

Some short term solutions I've used in the past include going for a run (as fast as I can, so I can't focus on how I'm thinking or feeling), or holding ice-cubes in my hands for the strong sensation.

Are there any other things you think you might be able to try?

Like the others, I'd really recommend talking to someone about how you're feeling. Have you spoken to your mum about this before? You mentioned you didn't want her to think it's a stunt to get out of school - has she taken that view previously?

Hoping to hear from you soon!

Re: CONTENT- SELF HARM

latley i haven't been going to school and i just wanna stay home and i don't want to go so i thought if i told her this she would think it was just a way to get out of school.

Re: CONTENT- SELF HARM

i  struggle, my children are my light, the only reason i keep fighting. occasionally i have self harmed. it may sound silly to you i dont know but im learning reiki and meditating is helping lots!! i have had an awful past 2 days and i feel the meditation is all thats keeping me from harming myself x

Re: CONTENT- SELF HARM

It can be difficult to talk to friends and family about what's really going on in our heads. It sounds as though you are not ready to talk to your mum about what's going on yet as you feel she will just think it's another excuse. It looks as though you want some support, it might be a great idea to try talking to a counsellor like some of the ones mentioned above.
It might even be a good idea to schedule an appointment with your doctor and talk to them about how you are feeling before talking to your mum.
It can be difficult when you are in 'rabbit hole' of depression and sometimes it can feel as though things won't get better.
Have you ever tried meditation? There is a great app called smiling mind which has great guided meditations. I have personally found breathing and mindfulness excercise can do wonderful things during stressful and anxious moments.

Re: CONTENT- SELF HARM

Hey @nala23,

Would you be able to talk to her about the reasons why you haven't been going to school/why you don't want to go?

Re: CONTENT- SELF HARM

Hi @Cazza3, thanks for sharing your experience with learning reiki and meditating. I'm glad that's been helpful for you!

Re: CONTENT- SELF HARM

@nala23
Hey, how have you been feeling since the last comment?

In the past, i did do this and i was forced to go to the school nurse (the school didn't have a counsellor then) and i was really angry at the people who made me go, but now that i look back, it was the best thing that could've happened, going to the nurse. I highly urge you to get someone to see, you may be thankful in the future.
