Eating Problems

I just need to get this out because I'm so lonely and confused and not sure what to do. So lately I've been experiencing problems where I feel hungry but I don't want to eat, I'm not sure whether it's body image or not, it doesn't feel like it. My parents however have made comments on my body image. I checked that with the BMI calculator and it said that I'm average weight.

Usually my mum doesn't really care whether I eat or not, and it's usually my dad, but now I don't think he's bothered with my eating anymore. I don't like serving myself dinner because if so my parents will most likely make a comment about the serving amount, so I ask them what they think is right and to save the trouble of showing me how much to serve, they just serve for me. Now they don't bother at all with my dinner anymore. It's not a case of "What do you want for dinner?" or "When do you want dinner?" but it's now more like "Do you want to have dinner?" I know it sounds a little spoilt but I can't serve my food with them watching me and judging my every movement, then remarking that I should have less because I'm too fat or something.

Anyways, now I don't really eat at all- I don't have time for breakfast and spend my recess and lunches at school in the library doing all the assignments that have been piled up on me to avoid eating. If I feel extremely hungry though, I usually make myself a coffee or something so that I can concentrate better. In classes I've been getting a lot more tired and when I get home I'm absolutely exhausted because I live an hour away from my school (by train), and I have to walk home. I occasionally have the urge to vomit but nothing comes out. I've checked my weight though and I don't seem to be losing much, I don't know why. Maybe it's because my metabolism is slowing down.

If anyone has tips on how to lose weight fast without not eating, I would really appreciate it. I'm pretty sure I do enough exercise each day though as on the train to school and back I usually stand because there aren't any seats and it's pretty crowded. So that's 2 hours of standing and walking to and from my school and home every day. My school timetable also involves PE 3 times a week, so that would be another 4 1/2 hours of exercise. Honestly, I have no idea why I'm not becoming more "skinnier".

Hey @aH122586

Thanks for posting on Ro.com and a warm welcome to you!!

I read your post and i have found some factsheets that might be relevant from what you have described... by no means am i saying you have any of these BUT its good just to see what is out there. "eating issues" and "weight loss" is always a tricky one to understand if you dont think you have a problem. its sounds like you also have alot going on in terms of school committments and studying so i have found some factsheets on beating exam stress ( but you can apply it to school as well.)

Anorexia Nervosa ?

Managing stress

Beating exam stress

If you read anything in those fact sheets that sounds familiar to you OR you want more info on i wonder do you have anyone you can talk to about this?? Maybe a school counsellor or GP or Psychologist? If not there is always headspace or Kids help line

Re: Eating Problems

Hey @aH122586

Welcome to the forums Smiley Happy

Weight is a complex issue and a small obsession could turn into a big one and more destructive and it is very important that you are able to speak to someone about how you feel and what you are going through and its great that you chose us.

Have you told your parents that they make you feel bad when you are eating and now you are feeling more conscious about eating less? My mum always used to be like that, always saying things like you are going to get fat and because of that I was constantly putting myself on diets and trying the newest fad which is just not healthy. I eventually told my mum that she made me feel horrible and literally drove me into this obsession that I was not okay as I am and she stopped.

I don't know if you know this but not eating or eating less than you should be, can drive your body into starvation mode and slows down your metabolism making it harder for you to lose weight. In my opinion, you really need to focus more on eating healthy foods, eating regularly and not worrying so much about your weight. That is a slow process and takes a lot of life changes but that is my best tip and I can actually say it works, I've lost weight, have more energy and eat more than I used to on any fad diet.

Have a read on this factsheet about being healthy at every size and here is one on body image they might help you see that it is not always about being skinny but its always about being healthy.

I hope this helps you in some way Smiley Happy

Take care

Re: Eating Problems

Thank you for the welcomes and replies Smiley Happy I unfortunately don't think that I can talk to my parents, as they have the "suck it up life is hard" attitude, but I might be able to talk to friends. Currently I have a bit of an unstable friendship though...I've just left a group and am currently trying to move on.Anyways, I admit that I do feel really cold at times, count my calories and I'm hungry but won't admit it, so I could be showing extremely early signs of Anorexia Nervosa, but maybe I'll try to every morning have a bit of food and drink as much as I can during the day to keep myself hydrated, as sometimes I even go without water for a couple of days.

Thank you so much for the links and advice, they really helped! Smiley Happy

Hey @aH122586 - if some of t he symptoms of an eating disorder sounds familiar to you, and talking to your parents isn't an option - it could be a good idea to check out Butterfly Foundation. Re: Eating Problems

Hey @aH122586,

Welcome to ReachOut! I think some of the best advice I was ever given about my weight and eating was - learn to eat well and never diet. Your body is your amazing machine that does so much for you. Love it, and take care of it. And that goes for your mind and soul as well - take care of your mental health, make sure you're not running yourself down (negative self-talk) and don't take it on board when other people want to run down your body. That's their problem, not yours!

Thanks for sharing your story and I hope you'll continue to let us know how you are doing. Smiley Happy

Re: Eating Problems

Hi there!

Well there is some good news and some bad news! The bad news is that there is no "quick and easy" way too lose weight fast- any product or diet that claims to do so is probably a scam! The good news is that you don't have to stop eating if you want to look good and feel good- something that you should do for yourself (not your friends, parents or anyone else!). The best way to look good is to do excercise and eat healthy. Eating enough and regularly will keep your energy up so you'll feel good as well and not constantly hungry. If you really want to lose weight, make sure you're eating enough fruit and vegetables and avoid sugary drinks and junk food- it will have a better success rate than not-eating.

Finally, it's up to you what your ideal weight is, and not your parents! Try not to focus too much on being "skinnny" and more on being "healthy", it's much more important and attractive!

Best of luck! Smiley Happy Smiley Happy

Re: Eating Problems

Hi again, sorry that I was not able to come on earlier due to so much going on. Anyways, yes, I'm managing to have a bit of food every day now. I'm still sticking to the one-meal-a-day pattern whenever I need the energy but haven't fully stopped for a while. Recently there have been two days in a row without food or water patterns, but I'm trying to grow out of that.

Thanks for all the kind words and support! I really appreciate it.  Smiley Happy
