Let’s Chat: NAIDOC// Heal Country
This week is NAIDOC week, and we will be having a chat about what NAIDOC week is and diving into this years theme, Heal Country.
Before we get started I wanted to acknowledge that I am posting this from Wadawurrung Country. I am a proud Arrernte man living on Wadawurrung Country. Both of these places have huge significance to me, from the place my ancestors were born and raised, and my family still live on, to where I live now, on Wadawurrung Country where I raise my own family, I work, live and play on this land.
I would like to share same of my favourite artists/music as a starting point for you to show your support for our wonderful and ever so talented First Nations people

Music is a huge part of my life, listening and playing music is a way for many people including myself to share stories and express ourselves.
Throughout this week I will add replies to this thread with art work, movies, influential people.
Onto our theme for this NAIDOC week....
This years theme is Heal Country.
To me, heal country means not only sustaining the physical land myself and my people stand on, but also the lands, sacred sites, waters, customs and languages.
We want stronger measures to protect these and value them, holding onto these for more people to learn from.
How will you follow in the theme of Heal Country?
Do you know of any First Nations people doing great work and would like to share?
We did something at our nursing home today to celebrate this week! 🙂 We had a table set up with some pictures and other information about this week.
Aww @WheresMySquishy that is so lovely to hear!! Did the residents enjoy it?
Also, I thought I'd post the events that are taking place for NAIDOC - you can check them all out here. We are also doing something extra special to celebrate for our new Ask Me Almost Anything Lives (formerly Ask A Pro) over here you can pop through your questions.
@Bre-RO I personally don't know if any of my residents celebrate this week, but most of them love getting involved in events! They love to celebrate their cultures. We have a map on the wall where residents have tagged where they are from.
This week is NAIDOC week - this year's theme is Heal Country.
The following words come from the official website- as a non-indigenous person, I aim to amplify and hero indigenous voices wherever possible.
We're also looking forward to hearing from @Saltwaterdreamtime later this week, and any other indigenous folk who want to join in - this is your space.
So- the following words are from the Naidoc Week webpage:
NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
This year's theme is Heal Country: and how you decide to make that come to life is up to you.
This page has some great ideas for holding a NAIDOC week event, whether you're indigenous or non- indigenous
There's also some amazing free webinars that you can check out here:
5 July 6:00-7:30 pm | Custodians of Country
6 July 6:00-7:30 pm | Healing our Waterways
7 July, 6:00-7:30 pm | Healing our Lands
9 July, 6:00-7:30 pm | Pursuing Global Justice
And I've been loving reading more about the history and culture of my local area - I love hiking, and where I live has a rich indigenous history, which I'm loving being able to learn more about. I found this video about Northern Sydney here, there's so much to learn about the history of your local area, wherever you are in Australia.
If this resonates with you, it could be a great way to celebrate NAIDOC in lockdown - especially if you can head to an uncrowded area near you 🙂
Your local council can be a cool place to start, most of them will have heaps of free info about the history and culture of the land where you live- I have been lucky enough to see a lot of middens, rock carvings, and sacred sites on bushwalks less than 15 minutes from where I live.
Some pages I find super informative are Blak Business, the NAIDOC page, and if you like a spot of retail therapy, this is a list of brands you can buy from to support indigenous artists and indigenous owned and run businesses.
Clothing The Gaps have some great clothes, stickers, bags- and I really like how they suggest what stuff is good for allies - I know that I've sometimes wondered that, and I've picked up some great facemasks from these guys
Another thing I saw today that I thought was cool was a weather report using the traditional names for the capital cities:
How will you celebrate NAIDOC week? We'd love to hear from you in the comments, and please share any links, music, resources too!
Love those resources
We did something to celebrate NAIDOC week at the hospital I work at! 🙂 Some of the staff did a special activity with the consumers.
We might also use special sign-in stickers to mark this week.
Today I spent time at one of my favourite places on Wadawurrung country, taking in all the colours as I drove by and had lunch in the spot. This is what Heal Country means to me. It means savouring the waters and land, and every custom, language and story that comes with it. It is my favourite spot because of the red rocks combined with the ocean and all of the colours that make up those two.
I spent time with my bare feet in the sand.
Absolutely living for this thread @Saltwaterdreamtime have been listening to the tracks you suggested all day 🙂
This is a fantastic post @Saltwaterdreamtime, I'm working my way through all of these links now!
I'm a big fan of Thelma Plum. I feel as though she puts so much emotion into her lyrics about what it has been like growing up as a First Nation's woman in Australia. It always gives me such a buzz hearing her music on mainstream radio because non-Indigenous Australians like myself need to hear more stories like the ones she shares in her music. Better in Blak and Homecoming Queen are my favourites:
@Portia_RO Thelma ❤️
I wanted to make a playlist but it looks like I can’t share it directly on this thread without my Spotify username popping up.
Today I am sharing some artwork and artists
Iluka Art/Nathan P

Maggie Douglas - you may recognise her work on the NAIDOC poster.

Koorie Tales

These artists are just some of the people I follow and find interesting but I could be here all day if I listed them all.
This isn’t art but you can check out Blak Business for links to artists, and information.

Great work on this incredible NAIDOC week thread @Saltwaterdreamtime! You do such amazing work on these forums to show your pride regarding your First Nations identity and heritage.
Looking forward to listening to those artists and reading future updates!
