@chicken_wing these are some great questions.

I think people are definitely capable of change. 

Our past doesn't have to define our future. We can use our past to help push us to where we want to go, but it doesn't have to. We can't choose our past but we can choose how we react to it.

I don't think we get to choose how our life goes, or where we end up, but we certainly can guide it.
