@gina-RO Just remember that you will not get every job you apply for, and that ok! I would suggest to keep applying for other job and remember that the job you get will be the right one for you based on your qualities and attributes that you can bring to the business.

@gina-RO it is my pleasure. There are so many good questions and I'm so glad they are being asked! How can I be "professional"? What does that even mean?? when someone says "be professional" they are generally referring to changing your behaviour. the word "Professional" means to have a an acquired knowledge within your employment space in order to earn a living. it's not always about being professional, its about having the right attitude. and that could mean many things. eg: - presentation skills - appropriate language - image - body language How do you recommend navigating a new workplace when you feel out of your depth? I would suggest seeking support from your fellow colleagues and taking the time to get used to your new environment. it's easy to feel overwhelmed but with the right support you will get through :)

@gina-RO References don't necessarily need to be from a previous employer, they can also be given by a friend, a family member, a teacher or anyone else that would be able to answer any questions about yourself and your qualities. Also be aware that constructive criticism is good for personal development. so if you didn't do too well in your previous job, it might be worth your while to contact them and ask them what you could improve on for future.

@Bee very simple. I stopped thinking that I needed them. rather, they needed me. that alone gave me confidence but also starting ice breaker questions with them, breaking down the barriers and just being as real as could. I'm not saying that it worked with everyone, but it help me knowing that I went into an interview and I was completely myself. I owned it! and so should you :) :)

C an an employer fire you for saying you had a mental illness?
Even though it shouldn't happen, It unfortunately does in some circumstances where the employer just doesn't have or is able to provide the support that the employee needs. I would recommend to seek further assistance if you are ever in a situation like that. Also keep in mind that there are Disability employment services out there that are able to offer on the job support if needed which would also be an incentive to the employer at times.

depending on the hours you work, legally if you are entitled to a lunch break then that would require you to be away from your work station for the duration of your break.

I really struggle with interviews - I freeze. I find it really hard to feel confident in interviews, and I panic more in practice interviews, yet I really want to work. How can I show an employer what I can do when I really struggle to sell myself or answer any questions confidently? The moment I stopped thinking that the interviewer was "higher in status" or "better" than me, was the moment I started to take control in my interviews. Just remember that the person across the table is just another person that is interested in finding out more about YOU. don't let your nerves get to you, IF I CAN DO IT, SO CAN YOU. I used to suffer from severe anxiety myself so I know exactly the feeling you are talking about. Practice your deep breathing before and throughout the interview, take your time in answering the questions, let the employer know that you are nervous. They will understand :) lastly, do not make the decision for yourself whether you did well in the interview or not... I used to beat myself up thinking that I did horrible in the interview, then I would get a call saying that I was successful. try to be as positive as you can be and that will show through your nerves :)

hmmm sounds like you may need to speak to the HR team? if you feel that they had let you go without notice or any apparent reason then you might need to take it further, you could always speak to a union as well.

How can we keep the anxieties/nerves at bay during a job interview? breathing techniques are a good start, always think positive and remain calm. give yourself time to answer questions as it does not need to be rushed. When employers ask for your top weaknesses, is that a trick question or should I be honest? - It's not a trick question, generally employers would like to see what areas you need development and will make a decision on whether they are able to help you develop your weaknesses or not. it's important to be honestI

@j95 Mental health is very common in the work place and many employers are across this. there is plenty of support out there to assist not only yourself on the job but also the employers as well if needed. Never let your barriers hold you back on the job you want to apply for, they do not decide for you :)

Absolutely @gina-RO There are some companies that have an influx of applications therefore they would have a system in place to filter through and depending on HR requirements they may have to ask certain questions. The formalities would be handled through a team. as opposed to a small business where you are dealing directly with the owner, it's an easier process most times.

That's correct @j95. some small businesses don't advertise online. It's always a good idea to introduce yourself to your future employer and build rapport with them as it will leave a good impression.

Absolutely they are a reliable source. As intimidating as it sounds, you MAY be up against quite a few people but the likelihood of the employer not reviewing your application is very slim. It would also be a matter of whether your skills and attributes are what the employers are looking for. so it's always good to have your resume and cover letter up to scratch where it compliments the job you are applying for.

if you have a mental illness should you declare it during a job interview? Or do you wait until you get the job and then declare it? depending on the job and how comfortable you are with sharing that information. Some jobs require you to disclose any mental illness/ disability. If you feel that your mental illness will directly affect your work, then it may be a good idea. the choice is yours.

A good way to start would generally be the main platforms such as seek or linkedIn, otherwise if your job is more specific, recruitment agencies or employment centres where you can get the support and assitance you wish.
