Really great question. You dont want someone to shut off bc they've been pushed too hard. After youve brought it up considerately, that youre worried about them and that you're there to listen, then sometimes the balls in their court

Is family just partners? Is it still family violence if children are hurt? I feel like the media only shows violence between partners.
An important aspect of family violence is that it is controlling or violent behaviour. This can affect anyone from the children or partner/s. Kids often have to deal with seeing the violence or are neglected if parents cannot attend to childrens needs.
I think the media are getting better at raising awareness that kids get hurt too by family violence to o

We have many male survivors of family violence come through our doors. It takes many of them a while but we are here to support them when they are ready

Sadly it can be invalidated by many. Violence is violence regardless of gender, and sexuality. It is often tough for male survivors to reach out as they might feel stigmaitised

Sometimes walking away form the conversation or saying 'come on, thats not cool' will suffice.

Even as a bystander you can do something! Tell your mate its not cool when he tells sexist jokes at a party... or when a friend is yelling at his girlfriend. It might take a bit of courage but you can make a difference

Its true females can be perpetrators when it comes to family violence but the sad fact is that most deaths and serious injuries are against women by male perpetrators. More than 1 female is killed each week in Australia by a male partner or former partner. A third of females have experienced physical violence and 1 fifth have had sexual violence. We know most guys are not violent and are respectful but most of the violence out there in families are by guys. Sad fact but we can all do something about it!

What are the long lasting effects for children who have been exposed to family violence?
Effects can range depending on the individual- Low self-esteem, sadness, depression, fear and anxiety.
Its important and often feels better once people talk to someone- a friend you trust, a teacher, helplines on the phone and online if someone feels those things
effects can vary from person to person. some long lasting effects can include:
re victimisation
entering a relationship with similar dynamics to what one was exposed to
difficulty in relationships
problems with self esteerm
please note these are general effects and can also occur in people who have not been exposed to family violence

Are the effects of DV always obvious and how can we tell if others are affected? Sometimes DV is obvious but sometimes it is kept very secret. One student i remember was really studious and a top student and we thought everything was fine home but found out he was locking himself in his room to study because mum and dad were fighting all the time.

Well theres a number of things to look for and consider. It all comes down to good communication- this might be verbal dialogue or body language. If you’re not sure, then ask instead of assuming We see a lot of ppl getting into trouble because they didn’t ask for sexual consent. If someone is silent or have their arms crossed or turn away, its a sign they might be uncomfortable

Neglect might be more passive, but is still a type abuse - lack of care, constantly ignoring, and a lack of needs being met. Abuse can be more direct and aggressive but they are both a form of violence! Violence/abuse comes in all forms- emotional, verbal, physical, social, financial, sexual, technological/cyber, harassment and neglect. All these can and do hurt.
