[CHAT] Body Image
It’s summer here in Australia, and with summer comes pressures and expectations about what your body should look like and what you should be doing. These pressures can come from lots of places – from yourself, to your mates, to the ads you see on TV. People think that they have to get the perfect "bikini body", or that it's time to lose weight, or that they just need to look their best when they're down at the beach with their friends.
Does society (and ourselves) put unreasonable expectations on us? How can we overcome this? How can we stay positive about our body?
All of this can be a bit overwhelming and confusing, so join us here on Monday 27th February at 8pm AEDT, or click 'Reply' to start the chat now!
Aaand that's me out. Gonna scurry off to bed before my headache picks up again. Night everyone!
Hey everyone! Sorry I haven't been around much lately- I caught a bug off someone at work and I've been spending the past week sick as a dog .
Hey everyone,
Tonight we're going to be discussing an issue that is big in society today, body image and body confidence.
AThis can be a difficult topic so if at all you find this conversation distressing or you feel like you need to talk to someone, please don’t hesitate to call lifeline (13 11 12) or Kids Helpline (1800 55 1800). Looking forward to this convo tonight! Definitely going to be interesting 🙂
Hey everybody! So lovely to see you all tonight! .... well your avatars anyway
Heya all! I probably won't stick around because it's a billion degrees in my room right now, but wanted to pop in and say hi 😛
What does a healthy body image look like?
What does a healthy body image look like?
Accepting yourself for who you are and not letting your flaws get to you. And I guess it's also looking at things that can be changed and realising that sometimes it might take a while to change things sometimes and you have to be patient with yourself.
Oh that's interesting @May_. So instead of saying, 'Man, I wish I looked more like her,' you might say, 'Wow, she looks nice today.' Or something?
@roseisnotaplantyeah thank you for putting that into potential thoughts to have 🙂 I think that is really important. Another one could be maybe something like instead of "wow how does she look like that I want to look like that but I never will" you could think "that person must eat healthy and exercise so that motivates me to take care of my body"
I think it's important to remember that Barbie and superman aren't ideal for what women and men should look like
Absolutely @loves netball. It worries me that characters like that are marketed to younger kids. Do you think it's unhealthy having that like 'perfect' image put into the heads of five-year-olds? I've never really thought about it like that before.
Oooh that's a good question @roseisnotaplant and kinda ties into our next discussion question:
Where do you think the pressure to "have a good body for summer" -or just a particular body image- comes from?
Without hesitation, I have to say the media. Everywhere we look is images of unrealistic models with the perfect bodies, stick thin legs and blemish-free faces.
Even having these endless filters on our devices for photos is only supporting this industry and idea. It's taken over society and is consuming all of us, especially our younger generations who are growing up with technology.
haha sorry @roseisnotaplant! I think i accidentally stole your question, ooops
I think this can mostly be attributed to the media, fashion industry, celebrity culture, etc.
