Harmful Opinions on Social Media

Hey all 👋

I wanted to make a space to talk a little bit about being faced with harmful and dangerous opinions on social media. Sometimes  someone can say something for shock value, to gain clout or widespread attention on socials, without considering how it affects other people. I know a lot of the RO mod team have seen increasing amounts of this on socials lately, with some expressing extreme and concerning misogynistic (prejudice against women) and homophobic (prejudice against gay people) views on their platforms. So I wanted to check in to see how everyone is feeling about it, if you've also come across this too?

Some influencers can be very clever at debating things in a way that makes them seem like they have a lot of knowledge about the topic, and suggest they are someone who says things other people aren't 'brave' enough to say. That can be appealing to people, especially young people who can feel like they aren't listened to in their real life. Sometimes it can take a while to unpack what's actually being said before realising how problematic it really is. It can be really important to take a step back and reflect on the effects these views have, before adopting them too.

I feel like it's important to open up both sides of this conversation - for the people who these harmful views affect, and for the people who find community in these followings because they haven't been able to find that support elsewhere. So I have a couple of questions...

1. How do you feel when you see opinions on social media that are harmful?

(Is there anything you do that helps you cope when this happens?)

2. If you notice your friend engaging in these harmful views, how would you react?

(Do you unfollow them, do you try to talk to them about it?)

Let me know your thoughts below! 😊
