A,B,C is easy as 1,2,3.

No this week we aren’t talking about old school songs, music, or artists. But the Jackson Five give a nice little introduction to learning. So feel free to get this bopping tune stuck in your head for the rest of the day, before you read on  🙂

So let me start again… Life is one big learning experience!!

As young babies and toddlers we learnt to cry when we were hungry or wanted attention, we learnt to understand the sound of our parents voice, we eventually learnt to crawl, walk, babble… and I could go on but frankly I do not remember what I learnt, all I know is I can still do these things now. As we get older we achieve greater milestones like learning the alphabet, learning to count, learning to write our name, and even riding our bike with no training wheels (insert legend status here). All of this ABC business is as easy as 123… right?? Apologies for the Jackson Five lyrics but learning some new things is not as “simple as Do re mi”. Sometimes learning can be harder for some people right from the outset.

So why does it seem the older we get the harder learning becomes? Who dictates these life lessons and learning experiences? Who decides what is easy to learn and what is hard? And is it worth persevering? Why do we need tolearn new things anyway?!

Life is abit like school… every year or grade seems to become more challenging, with more homework. So it seems learning new things can become more complex too… especially when we learn things like what love is, what loss is, what it is like to grieve, what it is like to forgive (or not), the importance of our values, beliefs, and views, we learn about ourselves, hey we might even try learning another language (and trust me when I say if you are past your childhood years the brain thinks this is hard).

Is there really an answer as to why learning becomes more difficult? Is it because our memory has better recall between the years 10 - 40? Or maybe we loose our childhood innocence and are exposed to the big wide world of reality? Or maybe math just got harder and that is how it is!!

If you would like my opinion, (well I am going to give it out anyways) I think learning becomes harder because frankly there is always more to learn, more to experience and more to build on in life. Therefore, we all emphasize different learning experiences or things. What I find easy, someone else might find hard. What I have learnt may be completely different to what you have learnt, or the way you learnt it.

We all have a lot to learn so please join us tonight at 8pm EST where we will be talking about what it is like to learn new things, and why this can be a good thing to do!

What is one of the easiest things you can recall learning?

I am not sure specifically. Usually the lessons that are the easiest to learn is when I was punished for making a mistake at the first attempt, or when I am dedicated to doing well in this particular task. Sorry, it is a bit vague.

@ashleemaree that is sooooo true! learning from your mistakes is massive... sometimes it takes a few goes to master this.

Learning to compose music allowed me to express how I was really feeling in ways far greater than words

Learning Martial Arts taught me how important peace and compassion are.

Learning that nothing truly ends, everything  just takes on another form was profoundly liberating

Learning that faith, love, learning and art are the meaning of my life 🙂

@fosterthepeople - I  will say that colouring in came naturally to me too - won a few competitions in my time haha.

I thought that people might be able to think of more frustrating/challenging/things they found hard to learn. So it would be interesting to hear...

What are some of the most challenging/difficult/frustrating things you recall learning?

Probably the most difficult one was learning that what other people think about you really doesn't matter at all

Another tough life lesson was realising that some people will never like you and that's okay. That one was a really brutal one to figure out for me.

I know a lot of people who have difficulty with learning that their identities in high school don't matter after high school. I think I got lucky in that regard — I'd left all that high school cliquey nonsense behind by the time I was in Year 9.

There are some things I am still learning like how to manage my mood, emotional distress and interrelational disputes. There are somethings I just dont understand like physics and chemestry (I am a science student). The worst learning environment is when there is no support from the people around you.

@Doris emotional distress you can say that again
i can get frustrated so easily and even if i don't say anything ill be thinking it in my head and i hate that sometimes. it's really draining so i'm working on that as well.

So true!

It was really hard to learn the whole "just be yourself" thing. It worked for me but it took me a long time to realise there was no need to act any differently.

Patience, too, was a tough thing to learn.

I always wanted to learn first aid. I wanted to know what to do when someone is in a health crisis. I am not sure what is holding me back apart from the financial costs of learning first aid.

What can be difficult or trying about learning new things?

- making mistakes

- comfortable in my comfort zone

- just putting things off

- you think you're done learning

- not sure where to start how to approach learning

- not use to learning something "that" way

like how people have different ways of learning that works for them

a one size fits all isn't for everyone

WHAT WE LEARNT ON TONIGHTS GETTING REAL SESSION....

Heres a little recap!

Tell us about a significant learning experience you have had. Why was/is this experience important to you?

Everyone had fantastic learning experiences that they considered significant. Here was a recap on some of the experiences people shared tonight….

  • Thirteen years of school or university– apart from the school work, you learnt about peer interaction along the way. Formal education was important for some people to be where they are in life today.
  • Being diagnosed with an illness.
  • Moving away from home or spending time away from home.
  • Loosing a loved one or a relationship that changes.
  • Learning to do things for yourself.
  • Learning to become familiar with things rather than constantly seeking change .
  • Significant learning experiences are sometimes related to change, a challenge, learning more about yourself or others and stepping out of our comfort zones.

What is one of the easiest things you can recall learning?

-          Learning to compose music.

-          Learning martial arts.

-          Tying show laces.

-          Brushing teeth.

-          Learning that nothing ends – everything changes into a different form

-          Learning the meaning to ones life.

-          Skipping.

-          Learning how to colour in.

-          Learning to use a fork.

What is one of the most challenging/difficult/frustrating things you recall learning?

-          Watching someone else’s difficult journey can be a challenging thing to learn about even if you only witness it.

-          Moving on from the past.

-          Learning a new language.

-          Managing mood and emotions.

-          Science subjects – or being in an environment where people do not want to help you.

-          Getting involved in new relationships.

-          Learning to run so consistently.

-          What other people think about you doesn’t really matter.

-          Some people will never like you (high school identities don’t end up mattering as much as we think).

What is something you have always wanted to learn?

-          Learning first aid

-          Shirt or clothes designing.

-          Magic.

-          Circus skills.

-          To drive.

What can be difficult or trying about learning new things?

- making mistakes

- comfortable in my comfort zone

- just putting things off

- you think you're done learning

- not sure where to start how to approach learning

- not use to learning something "that" way

- making a fool of yourself.

- it is hard to keep trying if the first time at something is hard.

- over coming the fear.

Thanks so much for participating tonight everyone. I hope everyone enjoyed reading and learning about others experiences J

Welcome back!
