Fear for the worlds demise

recently in the past month I have gone from constantly wanting to die too extremely fearing it, as well as having extreme around the world ending. I truly don’t know how to help with all this, I’m losing sleep and becoming harsh to the people around me, I don’t mean to im just really scared I don’t know what to do with myself. I sit and wonder if I am the only person that feels this way since it’s not a very common fear I believe.

Hey @Melon_Impala

That’s a really tough thing to be dealing with but you are not alone by any means. It makes total sense to fear the world ending, especially considering the current state of things from the environment to the current conflicts. There’s so much uncertainty right now so it’s a complete justifiable fear. Is there any one you can share your concerns with? Sometimes it can be helpful to voice what’s going on in your head as you might feel a bit less alone.

Death anxiety is also common. Hopefully it signifies that there are aspects of your life that you like and that you would miss if you were to die.  I think it’s more of a concern to not be completely unafraid of dying. I too went from constantly wanting to die to being afraid of it. It was such a big change making it hard to get used too. It did get better/more comfortable over time. I found it helpful to do things that I find meaningful or that gave me joy. That way it kind of felt like if I were to die, I still would be somewhat satisfied with how I lived my life.

Unfortunately, sometimes fears are just going to be there, but you can have a say in how much it controls you and what you choose to do with it. It sounds like these fears are having a significant impact on your life so it might be worth bringing up with a mental health professional if you can. They’ll be able to provide you with both ways to deal with your fears as well as better ways to communicate them to other people.

Best of luck!

Hi @Melon_Impala

Welcome to the forums, we are glad you have found us as you navigate this stressful time.

It sounds like these thoughts are very distressing for you. To be experiencing this anxiety for the last month must have left you feeling completely exhausted, it’s no wonder you are snapping at the people around you. I wonder if you have been able to open up to any of your friends or family about how you are feeling and the toll it is taking on you? You mention that you believe this fear is uncommon, however I believe many young people in particular have fears for the future, especially relating to climate anxiety and international conflict. Perhaps if you share a bit more with us around your specific fears you will find there are other community members who relate?

I hear that the anxiety and fear have been affecting your sleep, sleep deprivation can really take a toll on both our physical and mental health. Have you found any strategies that have worked to help ease the anxiety or improve your sleep? Here is an article on how to manage anxiety and one on getting a good night’s sleep that you may like to check out.

I am also concerned to hear you say you have constant thoughts of wanting to die. We will send you an email soon to check in with you, please keep an eye out for it.
