I’m worried I have diabetes!

I’ve convinced myself that I have type 2 diabetes and I’m freaking out 😞

Type 1 and 2 both run in my family and I googled the symptoms which matches exactly how I’ve been feeling lately.
Help 😞

hi @iamchappellroan

How are you feeling about it all now? Have you gotten a professional opinion?

I have self-diagnosed myself with a whole range of diseases, including diabetes, after googling my symptoms. Each time I work myself up into a state, go and see the Dr, and find out I have ...nothing, haha. I hope this is the case for you too. I really recommend seeing a doctor if you haven't already, as the others in this thread have said. It's really the only way to know for sure. If they say you don't have diabetes, then you can relax and know that you have been checked by a professional. They can also  give you some advice on how to reduce your chances of developing it in the future, and the warning signs to look out for. If they determine that you do have diabetes - well, best to know sooner rather than later so that you can start treatement. As far as I know, diabetes can be a burden for sure, but you can still live a long and fulfilling life with the disease. It wouldn't be the end of the world, and as it runs in the family, you would have people around you who have experience with it to support you.

I hope the symptoms have passed for you, and that it was a false alarm. If you do find out you have diabetes, remember that you can always share your journey with us at ReachOut, and we will support you as best we can. Take care 💛

Hey @iamchappellroan, thank you for sharing. It’s worrying when you know that your family has a history of a certain illness and I can see how this is causing you stress. Searching up the symptoms and relating them to what you’ve been feeling lately can be scary. But as others have suggested, talking to your family or going to a GP would be helpful to address your concerns. Sometimes symptoms on google can be inaccurate too.

In any case, I wish you all the best. Taking care of yourself at this time is important, is there something you can do to take your mind off things even for a bit?

Sending you lots of hugs and love 🤗💙

Hey @iamchappellroan,

Thank you for opening up to the ReachOut community. I'm sorry to hear this has been causing you a lot of worry. It makes sense that this would be worrying, especially with the family history.

As mentioned by @Marimo-RO, I also think a helpful step forward would be to have a chat with your family and/or local GP regarding your symptoms as they would be knowledgeable in this space. 😊

When I'm feeling overwhelmed I find practicing self-care do be beneficial. The smallest of things usually make the biggest differences, such as going on a walk outside or phoning up a friend. Do you think there's anything you can do to take care of yourself in the coming days?

I'm wishing you the very best. 💛

Hi @iamchappellroan,

Thank you for your courage in sharing your concerns about your health. Feeling convinced of a particular health diagnosis can be understandably stressful and shocking.

We want to let you know that the ReachOut Youth Community cannot provide any direct medical and/ or health advice as part of our Community Guidelines. We encourage you to speak to your parents about your concerns and get an appointment booked in with your GP.

We hear that naturally, you're feeling anxious about the symptoms you've been coping with matching up with a particular diagnosis. We're wondering if there's anything you feel able to do this afternoon to look after yourself?

Hi @iamchappellroan !

First of all, great job knowing you needed support and sought it out! That's not the easiest 🤗

Second, if you have these concerns, I suggest consulting your family (or your GP directly if you're living independently and are uncomfortable sharing your worries with your family)! Not only because it could or could not be true (check!!), but because you might feel so much more at ease if you have solid confirmation! You'll be able to handle the symptoms you've been having regardless of the cause and I think that can ease your worry.

BTW, this is a totally valid worry to have. It could be daunting and I really hope your worries are lifted however way it gets lifted. I'm really glad you came for support!

I've Googled the symptoms as well. Although I'm not sure which ones you have (and you don't need to disclose them if you aren't comfortable!), I think some extra self-care could help you out!

I hope this helps somehow. Just know we're looking out for you and wish you the best!

Please take care of yourself always! Feel free to respond again if you need a little rant sesh or to explain a bit more. 🌻🤗

(sorry for the ramble)
