Hey, I can totally understand why you’d be feeling worried about the dentist, especially with having multiple teeth taken out and a cleaning coming up. It sounds like you’re dealing with a lot of anxiety about it, which is totally valid. Dental work can be intimidating, and when there are concerns about something like endocarditis, it adds an extra layer of stress.

I know it’s not easy, but try to remember that dental work is routine for professionals—they do this all the time and are trained to handle these situations. The fact that you’re taking care of your dental health by getting the work done is a good thing, and it’s a step toward feeling better in the long run. If it helps, you can ask your dentist to walk you through everything that will happen during the procedures, so you're not caught off guard and can feel more in control of the situation.

Have you talked to your dentist about your worries? Sometimes just voicing those concerns can give you a sense of relief, and they can give you specific advice tailored to your situation. I’m here to chat through any of your other thoughts or concerns too if that would help. 😊

Hi @Periwinkle_Mongoose

I can deeply resonate with being very scared and anxious about going to the dentist, even if it is just for a checkup. Getting teeth removed is also very scary, and it is so valid to feel scared and nervous about this; same with getting a full scale and clean.

I highly suggest you express your feelings to your dentist; they can reassure you and explain the different processes. Your dentist would have worked with many clients from different backgrounds, and without a doubt, most would have experienced anxiety/fear about going to the dentist.

Do you think it might help to bring a support person with you to your appointment? Or maybe even ask some friends and family about their experiences at the dentist with getting teeth removed/a full scale and clean; even just expressing your anxiety could really help!

In the meantime, it is important to take extra care of yourself leading up to the appointment, I highly recommend doing things you enjoy/practising self-care.

Hey @Periwinkle_Mongoose

Getting dental work done can be so scary! I can see one of the things you're worried about specifically is endocarditis, I wonder whether you can bring this up with the dentist? I'm sure they'll be able to give you more information about this and if there's anything that can be done to prevent it as well. As Catlover101 mentioned, bringing up your concerns with them beforehand will mean that they can go the extra mile to help you feel more comfortable.

All the best! 💛

Hi @Periwinkle_Mongoose

I definitely understad your fear as someone who was born with an extra tooth and has had that taken out and a lot of outher dental work.

What exactly about it is worrying you?

The cleaning process cause be a little strange but the discomfort is temporary and you can always ALWAYS tell the dentist when things are hurting or getting too uncomfortable. They want to make it as comfortable as they can for you.

Maybe have a chat with them before they start with your worrys. Letting them know how you feel can also help them to be more gentle and comforting throughout.

Dental health is so important so if they think this is the best way to keep you healthy you will be happier doing it then leaving it!

You are strong and you are brave!

Hi catlover101

This is only the second time in my life which I have had dental work, because I use the public dentist i have come up on the wait list list for gernral care.

Also my dental hygine isn't the best because I have trouble using a toothbrush,

Can you tell me what the cleaning progress it like I haven't had one.

before also have you ever had a tooth broken at the gumline.

also what worry's me is because i was born with tet of fallet that I will get endocarditis even with the antibiotics I have to take prior to dental work,
because when I brush my teeth after the clean they will bleed which means I won't be on antibiotics coverage,

also I worry that having the tooth out will upset my thyroid which I have had trouble with this year thyroiditis after glaundra fever

and I also caught chicken pox this year both infections put me in hospital
so the hospital stays have definitely made me more anxious about germs and stuff

Hey @Periwinkle_Mongoose welcome to the community and thanks for reaching out about your worries around your upcoming dental work.

The dentist can be stressful enough on its own, but it would be so much more stressful with your pre-existing conditions and increased risk of scary complications. I think it's really understandable and quite rational you're feeling so anxious about it. I'm also wondering, like Catlover and Golden have mentioned, if you've been able to chat with your doctor or dentist about your worries at all? It sounds like you're quite informed about the potential risks of dental procedures but it could be helpful talking this through in more detail with a medical professional if you haven't already.

I just wanted to share some general resources in case these are helpful as well. Healthdirect has an article on dental procedures and this website has a number of resources about oral health which might be helpful. We also have an article on living with chronic illness in case that's helpful as well.

I'm wondering how you've been coping with this all, and if you have anyone in your life supporting you through this?

While we're not able to offer medical advice, the community is here to support you as much as we can 💜
