Overwhelmed about school

So in 12 days I go back to school for year 10 and it sounds exciting but it isn't really. I personally spent all last year for the last 3-4 weeks of school hanging out with this one teacher aide before she went on long service leave and she said she may return. I was talking to her a few days ago and she said she got a new job and that will mean she isn't returning. It's making me feel extremely overwhelmed because i don't know if it will be same how she ran things with me. Like giving me brain breaks, letting me play card games with her during break times and having fun together in the classes she supported me in. I'm just overwhelmed what's gonna happen this year without seeing her smile or there to play games together. Plus I'm overwhelmed over the new program my school is introducing but hopefully it doesn't trigger my anxiety or Austim. I'm dearly gonna miss the teacher aide but I'll always remember how much she actually cared for me and decided to look after my well-being. Until I write my next post about the first day back I hope you guys and girls have a great rest of your day and I'll catch you again some time. - Orange Falcon.

Hi Orange_Falcon,

Thank you for reaching out!

I found your post really relatable, because when I was in high school (year10- year 11),  I've also gotten really close to a teacher. Similarly, I found that looking forward to interacting and speaking with my teacher greatly motivated me to go to school and really increased my ability to handle the pressures of school. I can definitely relate to how having a teacher's support and friendship made a significant difference in my wellbeing and anxiety.

I can also relate to feeling overwhelmed and anxious due to program changes and losing a close support at school. It adds uncertainty while taking away some positives of school.

Nonetheless, I wonder if you could think about other positives of you school that will still be there next year? Are there other teachers or friends that you may be interested in becoming closer to? Are there other activities at school that you enjoy? I also want to encourage you to see if you can request for similar brain breaks with new teachers, especially if you really benefit from it. I believe there are other friendly and supportive teachers out there, it may just take some effort and time to find them. 🙂 Personally, I did end up meeting more friendly teachers in the later years of school. They were supportive and great to talk to, so I'm hopeful for you.

Hey @Orange_Falcon thank you for sharing so much with us tonight. Going back to school can be an incredibly overwhelming time in itself but hearing that this teacher aide won't be returning sounds even more difficult. I'm sorry to hear that you're going through this right now.

You mentioned that you are feeling overwhelmed because you don't know if things will be the same as how she ran them with you, especially with things like giving you brain breaks and letting you play card games. So I am wondering if anyone at the school is aware of how helpful these things were for you? I am wondering if maybe they might consider incorporating them into the new program, especially if you found them so helpful. Is this something you might feel comfortable talking to them about?

With so much going on, I just want to remind you that we're all here cheering you on. If at any time you would like to chat to someone, Kids Helpline is available via phone and webchat.

If you are up for it, we would love to hear how your first day goes too 💜

Thank you so much Courtney for all the support you have given me on here I appreciate it. And I'll try see if they try incorporate them into school this year. I'll hopefully back here when school goes back and it hopefully provides an update you want to hear. Thanks for making my day!

Welcome back!
