End of Term Bad Vibes

TW: swearing and potentially suicidal thoughts

FUcking hell i didn't realise my parents were such perfectionists when it came to grades all of a sudden. schools been unbearably awful this semester, increased workload, difficult assessments and no work-life balance, it makes me question my existence.

Reports came out today and for some reason one of my teachers refuses to give us our exams til tomorrow (last day of term), I got my report back and did awfully on the exam. Like last year, my instinct was drop the subject. Nah, my parents first instinct is to get a tutor. Oh wait, my parents don't understand mental health, they blame everything on games and hobbies. Hence, there is no purpose in continuing external activities that would improve my school-life balance.

I swear to fuck teachers never understand how hard some parents are to their children, they try but they don't do enough for us. At this rate, I'm not surviving Year 12, everything is going to be so demoralising, school, homework, tutor, study repeat. Yeah fuck my life. I've had my taste of going out alone but it flat out is not as enjoyable as with your friends, but my friends are busy and its so hard to find a workaround. Don't get my wrong my teachers are great, but there is such a heavy emphasis on marks that it deleniates everything else.

Its 18 months until the end of high school, but I highly doubt I can pull through these 18 months.

hey @yeah_it_tahtperson , I can really hear how exhausted you are with everything happening around you, and how it's affecting your well-being.

You mentioned in another comment that you were planning something nice to help with your situation - I was wondering what you have been up to recently. It sounds like it has been hard to hang out with your friends. Have there been any hobbies or activities that have been helping you cope recently?

I hope all is well.

Hi @yeah_it_tahtperson

I'm really sorry to hear that school has been so tough recently and pressure from your parents seems to have increased. That's a lot to cope with whilst trying to look after your well-being at the same time. It's really great that you have been able to talk about it here though and take that step of care for yourself 💖

You mentioned that you feel like your parents don't understand mental health, which must be really hard. I'm wondering if you've tried to talk to them about how you're feeling? Or if you have, how did they react? Is there anyone else in your family you think might be more understanding?

The last bit of school can be super stressful, and feel like it's neverending! I'm sure lots of people here in the community will relate. I'm wondering if there are any smaller things you can do over the next while that could give you little nuggets of joy in amongst everything? Maybe it's taking some breaks to do something creative, or to watch your favourite TV show, or getting your favourite drink at your local cafe - what makes you feel happy in the moment?

We're also going to send you an email soon too, so look out for that in your inbox 😊

Hi @Iona_RO

ive previously mentioned mental health to them but they just don't seem to get it, might just be because there arent particularly familiar about it.

I'll keep an eye on my emails, its going to be overwhelming in the interim but maybe i can plan something nice for myself in the meantime

Hi @yeah_it_tahtperson

Those last couple of years at the end of high school can be so exhausting especially when you have pressure from every side, tutoring, constant assignments... I was in a similar position when I was completing year 12, with parents that didn't really understand mental health and it was toughhh. When you're going through it, it feels neverending almost. But if there is one thing I have learnt, it's to make sure you're taking care of your mind and body as best you can. If not your parents, are there friends you can try to open up to? It's likely they're going through the same things and having support in the form of study sessions together and planning something fun to look forward to together as a reward for your hardwork might be invaluable.

Also, it can be so demoralising to not do as well as you'd like so I feel you. Is there a certain course you're trying to get into or is it just the pressures from everyone else do you think?

Well it's admirable that you've got the foresight to take care of yourself, it'll pay off in the long run no doubt. In terms of the course, that's really cool! I hope you manage to find more of the work/life balance you're looking for. But also know that there's more than one way to get where you want to. It's easy to forget when everyone's so laser focused on doing well and moving towards the same thing but once these 18 months are (finally!) over uni is more chill and people will sort of be doing their own thing. So many of the people I know (including myself) have transferred courses, taken a year off etc. it's more of a choose your own adventure than what it probably feels like now, and I can't wait for you to experience it.

Rooting for ya 💛
