I can’t sleep!

I’m having so much trouble with my sleeping atm… I’m always exhausted before bed and I fall asleep super easily but now I keep waking up randomly between 1am and 5am! Sometimes I can fall back asleep afterwards but I usually sleep lightly after that and I don’t feel refreshed when I wake up. It’s 3am right now and I just baked a batch of cookies to try and tire myself out 👍

Hey @iamchappellroan,

I'm sorry to hear you are having trouble with sleep atm! I've been there too and it sure is not fun but it is possible to overcome😄

Something really helpful for healthy sleep is to establish better sleep hygiene and I can't stress this enough... ROUTINE, ROUTINE, ROUTINE. It is important to establish a routine such as skincare, reading, meditation or tea before bed. This helps us to down-regulate, relax, and focus on a bit of self care to end our day. I love guided meditations as well if none of these steps help. They're easily accessible and free on youtube 💖

I hope these tips help, definitely give them a go and report back on if you found them helpful! All the best.

Hey @iamchappellroan,

Thank you for sharing with the ReachOut community. I'm sorry to hear you're going through this.

Here's an awesome post made by ReachOut with tips on how to get a good sleep.

Here are some things that help me get a good night's sleep:

  • Sticking to a regular sleep schedule
  • Limiting screen time before bed
  • Keeping my room cool and dark
  • Avoiding caffeine late in the day
  • Unwinding with a book

The sleep hygiene document posted in this thread looks super helpful too!

Wishing you all the best moving forward. 😊

Hey @iamchappellroan,

I'm so sorry to hear that you've been having a lot of difficulties with sleep! It's quite odd that you keep waking up between 1am to 5am, and find it hard to fall back asleep sometimes.

Has this happened to you before in the past? It might be a good time to book in and see your GP to discuss your concerns around sleep, hopefully they can work with you to figure out what can be done. Sleep is so important for us all, and getting interrupted sleep can impact us negatively.

As what @LilacLeopard14 and @Appel_banappel have mentioned about sleep hygiene, maybe have a look into this and see if there is any changes you could make.

I truly hope that sleep does improve for you!

Hi @iamchappellroan (love the name btw, chappell is great)

I definitely second @LilacLeopard14 to look into sleep hygiene - it's different things you can do to help improve your association with bed and sleep as well as become more sleepy at night. This sheet really helped me figure out what I could improve.

If this issue doesn't get better and is impacting your life I agree it could be helpful to see a doctor/GP to see if they've got any advice.

Hopefully the sleep gets better but mmm at least you got a tasty batch of cookies!

Hi @iamchappellroan

I am sorry to hear that you're experiencing sleeping troubles, it's the worst to be lying there awake and/or feeling sluggish the next day. I find watching a show on my phone or laptop rather than a TV helps me fall asleep. If you sit it on your bed next to you while you're lying on your side in a sleeping position, I usually end up drifting off. Listening to pink noise also helps me, and wearing an eye mask so no light that enters the room can wake me up. With regards to the quality of your sleep, it might be helpful to take herbal sleeping tablets or liquids that might help you remain asleep, or see a doctor and potentially get melatonin to improve your sleep cycle.

I hope it begins to get better soon!

Hi @iamchappellroan 🌸

I imagine that must be really frustrating not being able to get a good full nights sleep and wake up refreshed 😣

You may want to check out the Sleep issues  space here on ReachOut for some helpful tips and recommendations for improving sleep hygiene. If you feel like none of these work, you could consider seeing a GP to discuss your specific situation.

I hope you have some good sleep soon! (btw those cookies sound delicious 🍪)

Welcome back!
